Police today arrested the 16 year old John Katehis in connection with murder of George Weber, his body discovered last Sunday with nearly 50 stab wounds. George Weber was “the news guy” on WABC Radio’s Curtis and Kuby Morning Show and met John Katehis online through craigslist.
John Katehis met George Weber last Friday at the 47 year old’s apartment, having agreed to a sexual encounter for $60. Checking out John Katehis’ myspace page finds various violent statements, satanic images throughout, as well as “swords n knives” in their own photo album. Since this site will probably be taken down, you can see the screen captures over at Gawker.
Personally I’m a bit torn on how to respond to this whole John Katehis/ George Weber thing. While I’ve very tenuously held on to my last moral precept of “don’t make fun of dead folk” thus far, it’s hard not to tear into someone who invites underage boys over to his apartment for a little hanky-panky. And the fact George Weber didn’t check out John Katehis’s myspace page and see his collection of knives and swords at the very beginning just shows a certain lack of journalistic savvy in my book – for the most part half of news these days is finding a killer’s myspace page and saying the victim should have known better…
…Which is pretty much what I’m doing with George Weber and John Katehis here. So, does this make me a journalist now? Do I get a badge or something?
