This is a poem I wrote for my husband before we were married . I wrote this in 1988 & I entered it in a contest in the National Library of Poetry in 1995/96. It won and was published in 'Amidst The Splendor' in 1996. I thought I would share it here with all my gather friends, I hope you like it. P.S. My husband is a commercial fisherman & at the time I wrote this poem he was fishing for 30 days at the time in deep ocean waters 8 to 10+ miles off shore. Enjoy !!
'Sea Widow's Prayer'
If I could be a mermaid
and swim the stormy seas
Then I could crest the waves, and see
My captain,sail by me
If I could be a mermaid
no more to sit ashore
Then I could see my lover oft
my tears to fall no more
If I could be a mermaid
I'd sit my captain's bow
And guide him with my shining love
His safety I would vow
Oh, to be a mermaid !
so, I, but could embrace
The brow, the lips, the love,
that lights my captains face.
