Budget Sunday Dinner 3/22/09

I always like to fix something special on Sunday's for dinner.  I really miss my childhood days of Sunday dinner at grandma's.  My own mother didn't carry on the tradition.

Today I put the chicken to cook in the crockpot before we left for church.

I made chicken and noodles, mashed potatoes, dinner rolls and orange slices.

Cost breakdown:

5 lb+ chicken $5.17

potatoes $1

margarine .20

Hawaiian Sweet Dinner Rolls $1.40

Reames Frozen noodles-2 packages $4.98

oranges $2

Total cost as $14.74    and we fed 10 people.

 

I usually make my own noodles from scratch too but living at mom's and her kitchen being is such a cluttered up mess I just can't seem to do it.  Making them from scratch would have cost a fraction of the cost of buying the frozen, and I do mean a fraction like around only 50 cents!

That sounds so good, I wanted to put a roast in the crock pot this morning but our power was out a lot today. Sounds like you are having a great Sunday supper.

yeah, noodles are cheap to make but messy!! It's not too bad if you have a Kitchen Aid and a pasta maker! My husband got himself a pasta maker and it's much easier than my grandma's method of rolling out the dough!

Sounds like you did a good job. My mother didn't COOK...what's wrong with mothers? LOL I plan to start the big Sunday dinner tradition again once the baby comes. Today, we had cereal. LOL (It was a long day!) Great price breakdown. Do you find a difference between frozen noodles and dried???

That's impressive! The menu is awfully heavy on starches, though, and lacks healthy vegetables. Delicious though it may be, I couldn't eat it.

My mom used to always make a big dinner on Sundays. I tried to follow in her tradition but over time got too lazy.

I think Sunday Dinners are important to families but most young people I know don't want to be bothered anymore.It's just old fashioned.

This is awesome! You should check out Angelfoodministries.com It is really good food and really cheap, but the church that you order from gets a small cut. It has turned out to be really great for the community. Go on their website and it will list the monthly menu and if there is a location near you.
