Amish Friendship Bread or.......how I spent my Saturday!

Ten days ago my mom's friend gave her a bag of starter for Amish Friendship Bread.  Since my mom doesn't bake anymore she gave the starter to me.  If you've never made this, it's a ten day process until you can do the actual baking. You do something with the bag each day: either mush the ingredients or add more ingredients to the bag and then mush it.  On the tenth day, you get to bake this wonderful bread. It is good for dessert, or for breakfast, or for snacking. I baked today and used up all the starter as noone I asked wanted any starter to do their own baking.  I ended up with 8 large loaves and 4 small ones.   Have you ever been given a bag of starter?

I've never heard of this, but NO WAY am I waiting 10 days for dessert. (I'll go across the street and buy cookies first...LOL! Or even up the block to get me some donuts.)

I haven't gotten a starter for Amish Friendship bread which is delicious. I have an acquaintance that has a tea catering business and she hosts teas at your home, etc. and she introduced me to the delicious bread last year at an afternoon tea soiree.

Someone gave me a starter for Padre Pio bread.

I kept one of these starters for years, but got too busy and had to let it go. I'm thinking of seeding another, as I love true, fresh bread.

I've done it before. I just have to be in the mood to maintain it and bake it, etc... I baked a bunch last Christmas and gave away to friends. I don't always have good luck with it though. For some reason my oven doesn't bake them very well sometimes... I don't know why because it shouldn't be that hard, but I've had some problems with baking times in the past... anyway... it is yummy!

Yes, I have. About two years ago at Christmas I made several of the loaves for gifts for neighbors and friends. It was delicious.

I had this 20 years ago?! I kept it going for quite a while and my family loved it. I think we just got tired of it after a while, but I remember it was really good. Now, I don't bake much anymore and don't need the extra calories.

That sounds like a lot of bread Sandra, did you used all of it? My sister gave me some in the early 90's, I gave some of mine away what I remember. We had a snow storm during the time that I had the bread and was feeding it. We ran out of ingredents, I wasn't able to get to the store, so I had to let it die. It will smell bad if you don't feed it. I threw it away trash can outside.
I have a recipe, but I haven't tried it lately. I don't eat much bread anymore.

Years ago, I received a starter for this. It wasn't in a bag though. It was in a bowl. It is good, but I got tired of dealing with it all the time.

I think once years ago, I tried this. I know I did the sourdough which a nice lady shared with me. I miss it actually! I love homemade bread, but unfortunately, I never learned how to cook many of the items that I love.

Yes, i did this like 14 yrs ago when we first moved here. A neighboor gave it to me to do. I thought it was fun and the bread was good. Yours looks really good.
