We're living in tough economic times. I work my butt off, hubby gets maximum disability and we're still struggling to make ends meet. A couple of years ago we were in the black but now thanks to rising prices and the current economy, we are back in the red.
Despite the indifference of the government, we can all still take care of each other. I was reminded of this recently thanks to several friends.
One of our dearest friends is a CPA. He handles corporate taxes for several major NYC/international corporations. He knew we desperately needed our tax refund and took a block of time to do it for us for no charge. He's been handling my business taxes for free for years and I am so very thankful.
After the last big freeze, my car was making some seriously unhealthy noises and all the panel warning lights were going on and off like a Christmas tree. Another dear friend owns a mechanic shop near my hometown. The repair was a doozy (a brand new axle and related parts) but thanks to our friend, the cost was under $300 and we can pay it off as we have it. With a tax refund check on the way, that might be sooner than he thought ;)
Finally, my brother in law stopped by to ask me to set up his blog. He's been waiting patiently for months while I deal with "paying" customers. I stopped everything to create a killer blog. He repaid me by bringing over more than a cord of wood for the fireplace and neatly stacking it by my backdoor.
In a tough economy, that's what friends are for. Thank God we can all do for each other to get by. After all, government and big corporations are taking care of their cronies at our expense - we need to take care of our own!
