Let's face it: our skin is as varied as the shape of our eyes (or bums, or boobs -- you get the picture). Even from one day to the next, we can have dryness, some oiliness, then zits, and everything in between. Since our skin has such different needs, these products might not work for you. But if you're anything similar to this 30-something gal with semi-sensitive skin, the occasional breakout, and some past sun damage, read on and lust these life-savers:
1 -- Bliss Pe
eling Groovy Facial Serum
This nifty little exfoliating serum was recently reformulated and got its . . . ah . . . corny new name. Now it's way less sticky, absorbs better, and has bumped its way into my Top 5. You can use it every day, morning or night, and it doesn't sting (much) on sensitive skin. I like to smooth it on in the AM under my moisturizer. It minimizes fine lines, lightens post-zit spots, and doesn't give me the flakies. Plus, it's oil-free and packed with antioxidants -- and makes me a tad glowy. And what gal doesn't like to be glowy? Rating: 4.6/5 stars on Sephora.com. Price: $65
2 -- Shisedo Bio-P
erformance Advanced Super Revitalizer Cream (Whitening)
Don't let the word "whitening" fool ya. This superhero of creams doesn't make you look a porcelain doll. It doesn't even contain hydroquinone (skin bleach) at all. It simply gives your skin that perfectly bright and clear look. It works for all skin types, and helps you bid adieu to dark spots and uneven color. I use this morning and evening. The only bummer is that it has no SPF, so if you wear it during the day, you better slap on some sunscreen too, or the "whitening" is all for naught. Rating: 5/5 stars on Sephora.com. Price: $98
3 -- Murad
Night Reform
I've been using Dr. Murad's products since high school, and he's got some great ones. I use Night Reform before moisturizing at night -- and at night only -- because it works while you get your winks. A variety of ingredients give you a youthful glow, keep your skin hydrated, and improve elasticity. They claim it increases skin firmness by 28 percent in 10 minutes. Sounds like a tall tale, I'm the first to admit. But it does do wonderful things as you sleep, so you can awaken each morning with a flawless face like Sleeping Beauty (with Dr. Murad as your prince). Rating: 5/5 stars on Sephora.com. Price: $67
4 -- Dr. Brand
t Microdermabrasion
Microdermabrasion at a spa or a doctor's office is gonna run you about $100, even if you don't live in Boston. So save yourself some time and money and bring Dr. Brandt home. Well, his Microderm, at least. I've gotta admit, these diamond-shaped crystals feel a wee bit like glass fragments as I rub them into my skin. But it's only a minute of torture. And then? Radiant skin! The little shards of evil smooth fine lines and wrinkles, and improve overall skin texture. And you only have to torture yourself (read: exfoliate) once or twice weekly, so it really ain't that bad. No pain, no gain, right? 4.7/5 stars on Sephora.com. Price: $75
5 -- COSM
EDICINE Medi-Matte Oil Control Lotion SPF 20
My face turns into an oilslick in the summer. Nasty, eh? But if you've ever bought blotting papers, you can relate. This mattifying lotion actually does what it's supposed to: controls the oilslick, reduces shine for the whole workday, shrinks your pores -- all with SPF 20, to boot. The only downfall: it's rather thick, but not put-it-on-with-a-butter-knife thick. And its flaws are far outweighed by its fabulousness. I mean, by keeping oilies at bay, it even helps you avoid clogged pores (and subsequent pizza face). Bring on the summer sun! Rating: 3.7/5 stars on Sephora.com. Price: $42
