Many of us are looking forward to Friday, but not just because it's the start of the weekend. Friday, March 20th is the first day of spring!
Tonight, join a live chat from 8-9:30PM ET to discuss cooking and baking ideas to celebrate the new season. It might still be cold in some regions, but let's look towards brighter and warmer days. Tonight let's discuss picnics! Picnics are wonderful ways to get fresh air, while you share a meal with family and friends.
Tell us…
- When is the last time you went on a picnic?
- If you had enough food for five in your picnic basket, who would you invite?
- What would be the setting for your picnic?
- What types of foods and drinks do you usually bring to a picnic?
- If money wasn't an issue and you were confident in your cooking skills, what would be in your ultimate picnic basket?
- What are the benefits of a picnic as compared to serving a meal in a kitchen.

Now if it were a bbq, that is different to me....
On or around last Labor Day. We go on picnics often because my parents have 7 acres on a lake, no better place for a picnic. Sometimes the picnic is on their big pontoon boat, sometimes by the dock, sometimes on their balcony, and sometimes at the picnic table in their backyard. In the summer, we never eat inside.

Oh gosh, my family is way too big for that! I’d have to choose. Me, Keith, my mother, my father, and my sister Laura, if I had to choose. But I hate to admit I have a favorite sister.
At my parents’ lake in Michigan. The most fun spot would be on their big pontoon boat.
If it’s on my parents’ boat, we have to bring food in baskets and canned pop in a cooler. Food is usually a couple different kinds of chips, maybe some cold chicken (NOT KENTUCKY FRIED CHICKEN like Keith’s family does), maybe potato salad. My mother always brings way too much. She’d probably also bring macaroni salad, and more chips, maybe sandwiches.
...eh...maybe me and my husband could just have 2.5 picnics instead..?
Confident in my cooking skills is beside the point. I want to have fun on the picnic just like everyone else, SO I WOULD NOT COOK!
Instead, my ultimate picnic basket would have loads of pizza from a pizzeria. So what if it’s not still hot? Who’s going to tell me I can’t have pizza on a picnic? Huh?
You get to brush the crumbs to the ground if it’s on land. If it’s in a boat, you get to eat in the sun but not get hot because we don’t get hot on the boat, but we do have to sweep out the crumbs when we get home.
I would really want to bring potato salad, ham and sandwich materials, macaroni salad, maybe a rotisserie chicken then some jello and a small birthday cake for each person, all on a pastel colored tablecloth.
If money wasn't an issue I think I would go for the classic picnic meal of chicken, potatoes, biscuits, banana pudding...all of those things they always have in picnics on TV.
I find picnics to be much better than a kitchen meal, because it is less crowded and you can enjoy the benefits of nature. plus, you don't have to worry about making a mess.
For myself this would be that when I am outside I do things a bit more leisurely. Fresh air and sunshine tends to temper my desire to rush through a meal to rush on to the next thing.
it has been a long time. we do have bbq`s in the summer though. but a picnic at a park sounds nice.
