While I agree that was a foolish thing to do, and a disappointment to his fans, I think it's impossible to write off the things he has achieved in light of one mistake in his youth.

It was not too bright of him. My two oldest boys have ADHD like Michael Phelps. When my second oldest hears about a celebrity or high acheiver with this disability, he gets very excited. When the bong footage was released, it did give us a springboard to discuss once again that drugs are a poor choice, and that even those we look on as heroes are imperfect people capable of mistakes.
