It's hard to tell from this angle but that is one odd looking string instrument!
Here on the lower right you can see how odd the instrument is.
He was explaining this to some of the members after the perofrmance. The instrument has a slightly lower range than a voila. If it was degiend in the traditional sounding board it would be too long to hold in the hand so the sounding board is at an angle to the strings as it were. It still looks really funky although it does sound great!
