We always buy our roses at Aldi's, believe it or not. We've bought roses in the $30 range elsewhere that failed miserably, but the ones from Aldi's (about $3) outlive the expensive ones and put on a show all summer. They usually only carry them one week in late March or early April.

Yes, this area is always green - it's mediterrean and desert all mixed in one...anything grows - I'm sure if I put my broomstick in the ground, it would sprout. I'm looking for some banana trees to plant - I want this place to be a jungle. Salud
Leo bless your heart - I just put things in the ground and pour some morning coffee or evening wine on them - these don't require care and I never weed - I let it all happen - even dandelions can be made into wine and jelly! So, sunshine, wine, coffee and water and anything grows in California. Thank you - Thank you Curt - yes, these are my succulents - I have some more but the ole fart's truck was in the way! Salud
Your lush succulent garden makes me envious of your warm climate. Virtually none of those will grow where I live (on a tiny island in the north Atlantic). Gardens - sigh. Life is grand. KT

A dish garden... hm - if they can survive in the (are you sitting down) 50º my home is at during 6 months of the year, they're welcome to any dish in the house. Perhaps in spring I will consider making the Mariana Center for Displaced Succulents. Salud.

Mariana, the bleeding hearts are the 4th row, farthest to the right. I don't think that one is a succulent. I transplanted some from Mom's yard, but it just lasted two years. Hers was probably 25 years old.

Vicky, if you mean THIS, that looks like fuchsia to me, although at a quick glance it could be mistaken for bleeding hearts. I'm also a fan of bleeding hearts (dicentra spectabilis). They're great for shady areas.
Mariana, I love all of your succulents. I'm a big fan of succulents and have several growing inside in pots. Unfortunately, where I live now doesn't get the great southern exposure that I used to have so some of them aren't doing as well as they used to.
Janna - I don't do a thing except put them in pots and every now and then water them - anything I own has to grow on its own. I have a great compost pile - 30 years old that we tend - plus this area was once a walnut orchard and is on an area known for its good alluvial soil - Thanks for the link Janna - those are fuscias and they can be grown from sticking a piece of the stem directly in the ground - they do need watering. Xylem and phloem make up the big transportation system of vascular plants. Vascular tissue transports food, water, hormones and minerals within the plant. So for some plants, especially those with a woody stem like these fuscias, just a stem will work. And, girl, I can't spend big money on plants and when I do - I grow lots of babies from the stems, seeds, or leaves ...
Janna, dish gardens work great - and work in a sunny window - I'm sure you're already doing that if you're growing in pots.

I also can't wait to get out there and plant more veggies in the back yard. My husband actually got more stones/bricks to make the area designated for gardening larger for me this year! I am excited. I think it is so relaxing to be out "playing in the dirt" as my mom called it!

I love looking at your garden, Mariana. There's always something new or different to see. Lovely as usual! You are growing the cactus and succulents that I have to over winter under a light.

Lucky - that's the way I do it - no muss - no fuss - I let everything enjoy it too - bugs, snails, whatever - there's enough for everyone to chew on in my garden! Salud
