I just heard on Headline News that the state of Connecticut is considering taking control of the Catholic church in that state. The brouhaha grew out of the Church's opposition to two gay men wanting to get married. So, since this argument has arisen, Connecticut has taken the position that the Church obviously cannot govern its own church and the government to could do it better. I do not understand this at all. This is a country founded on the principles of freedom of all kinds, religious included. We are also a country (in spite of all our problems) that has more diversity and tolerance than any country in the world, that is why people from all over the world want to come here, and have their children grow up in the atmosphere of true, equal diversity, tolerance and freedom not really available anywhere else. In order to prove our diversity and tolerance, we don't have to be homogeneous. We eat in the same restaurants, shop the same stores and watch movies in the same theaters, we should not have to worship in the same buildings with others who do not believe as we do in order to prove a point. Anyone can worship anywhere! So if these men found that the Roman Catholic Church in Connecticut was incompatible to their beliefs, why did they not just either find a church that was, or start their own?
I am a Christian, and proud of it, but I am not running around, tying to shove "my gospel" down others throats, and it seems the same people that so often accuse people of my faith of offending them by sharing it, want to force their way in and change the way people of my faith worship. I, or noone I know is doing that to them; the same ones that cry for tolerance are showing so liitle of it themselves. And what of the government's famous mantra "separation of church and state"? After 80 years of our country hearing this proclaimed, giving "reason" to take prayer out of schools, making it illegal to have the ten commandments displayed in any school or public property, how is this possible? How can a government that claims that God has no place in government, think they can run a church? What is this, China? I know in China there are "government sponsored churches", but they deny God, so they aren't really churches, just govenment sanctioned social clubs. When I attend church, I want it to be church: I want to hear praise, prayer, the word preached, and testimony of what God has done for others. If I want to go to a social club, I will join one. If someone comes to my church, and doesn't agree with what is professed, well each to his own....go someplace else.

Not a fan of organised religion!
"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press, or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances."
But what the State can probably do is remove the tax exempt status of the Catholic Church by its discriminatory practices against gays.
That is why people of faith fought so hard to reverse the Court decision in California to allow gay marriage, by passing the Prop 8 Initiative. The GLAD foks will not be happy until they force people of faith to accept homosexuality as normal, which it clearly is not.
I’m sure that a “first year law student” could have won the case, but for other reasons. In the first place the bill was blatant enough to cite the Catholic Church by name. In the second case it involves the micromanagement of a non government agency; I’m sure that if they tried to do that with McDonald’s franchises they would have had similar opposition to such micromanagement of the structure of non governmental entities.

I'm not quite sure about the rationale, but that's been my understanding of why many Southern Baptist churches don't keep non-profit status.
