Modern technology now offers us a plethora of communication devices. We have high speed internet connections, email, fax machines, and internet telephone connections. Cell phones come equipped with cameras, internet access and text messaging capabilities.
While high tech devices are designed to facilitate communication, all too often, they impede it instead. Caller ID, for example, allows us to screen out unwanted calls. Call Waiting interrupts conversations. Voice mail and answering machines permit callers to leave messages to be addressed at a convenient time.
Convenience is an arbitrary concept, it seems. When a recorded greeting assures the caller that his call is important and that the call will be returned as soon as possible, the caller waits for that response. While common courtesy suggests that a prompt reply is required, courtesy is no longer common.
It seems that rapid communication has been hindered by screening devices. How ironic that we have lightning fast communication, yet interaction is delayed by bad manners.
I guess it's obvious that this is one of my pet peeves.

But you are right. When you leave a message somewhere.... especially if it's to a business, they should call you back as soon as possible. Relatives, friends or even acquaintenances are another matter, but they should also call back, just to be polite, if for no other reason.

Wanting something is not enough. You must hunger for it. Your motivation must be absolutely compelling in order to overcome the obstacles that will invariably come your way.
In the end, it is the person you become, not the things you have achieved, that is the most important.
call waiting drives me bonkers
hold is even worse, because you know they are just doing it to see how long before you hang up
