Years ago I helped design an Ammonia/Urea plan for Tawian and when ready to start, was chosen as part of the start-up team. It took us 1 year to complete the task and turn the automated plant over to the Tawianese to run. We had proved that everything worked as designed and they were very happy.
As soon as they took over our highly automated plant, they shut everything automated down and instead of using it, used manpower. Even our lab that was designed for 5 men found itself with 15 running around doing the work.
The part that got me is they shut down my automated bagging line for 80 lb urea bag storage and used all men. Can you believe that design I did, and proved worked, was shut down and hundreds of men did all the work? I considered them a little off at the time, but now I believe we can do the same thing with many of our plants.
Chang Kia Chec needed work for the people, but wanted to have a plant designed for when he no longer needed extra work. WHY CAN'T WE DO THE SAME THING TO MOST OF OUR INDUSTRY? SHUT DOWN THE AUTOMATION AND GIVE PEOPLE JOBS. THE COST TO THE COMPANY MAY EVEN BE LESS THEN KEEPING ALL THE EQUIPMENT OPERATING.
LET'S CONSIDER OUR NEW SMALLER CARS. THEY CAN BE MADE WITH MUCH LESS EQUIPMENT AND HEAVIER MANPOWER PROVIDING JOBS AND SAVING ALL THAT TOOLING AND OPERATING COST OF THE MACHINERY.
I KNOW THIS WORKS BECAUSE I WORKED FOR FORD STAMPING ON A PRESS LINE BEFORE COLLEGE AND IT TOOK TWO OF US TO REACH INTO THE PRESS AND PULL OUT THE TOP ,AND THEY PUT A AUTOMATIC MACHINE IN THE LINE NEXT TO US THAT DID THE SAME WORK. MY START SEEING JOBS DONE BY MACHINES, AND MEN WITHOUT WORK.
