Spring cleaning at my place starts with the bird houses in my backyard. I open them and clean out last years nest, both bird and hornets. Today I discovered four live hornets in one. Luckily they are pretty harmless when it's this cold ( under 40 ).
Yep that's me holding up a nest with a very cold hornet hanging onto it. Poor things were taken by surprise. When I scooped them and thier nest out onto the frozen ground.
This nest was interesting.
The ball like nest was added to an existing honeycomb like nest.
Made me think the extra walls were added just so they could survive the winter. But what they couldn't know is that I do Spring cleaning.

wont they come back to the birdhouse and try again
These guys are dead now exposed to the cold. I have always been more curious than afraid. I am not allergic but my Daughter-in-law is so I try to keep their numbers down.
you can cover the nest with a plastic bag for a few days and that should kill them especially if the sun hits it.

Their nests are fascinating but I'm of the "the only good hornet is a dead hornet" school. It covers wasps too!
