Baby shower etiquette?

I am expecting, we'll have a little girl this June. She is our first and we haven't been to any baby showers so we don't know the do's and don'ts...

We just moved 1800 miles from everyone we knew and grew up with and now a few girlfriends are throwing showers in our honor that we wont physically be present for. They've asked me to register for things and to provided relitives and firends contact info.

Is inviting people to a shower bad if the expectant parents wont physically be there? We are doing a live chat via the web during the shower, does that make it okay?

How do you handle announcements and also thank you's? Is it bad to invite everyone to both showers or should you only invite close family etc to one a friends to another?

Know of any other shower related do's and don'ts you can share? I am clueless!

For thank you's, send them as soon as possible after the shower. You can do them in conjunction with an announcement, as long as you include a separate note addressing the thank you.

Other than that, I've never been to, or even heard of a shower like this, so.. well, I'm not sure!

it is no longer unusual for this kind of babyshower. People have moved all over the country and their family and loved ones can't always come to them but they want to show their support and love. So register and let the ones throwing the party invite the people - you don't need to worry about it. Just let them know if there is anyone special you would like there.

as for the thank you's just send them as soon as you can. Make sure a good list is kept of who sent what so you know who you are thanking for what gift.

now It is a marvel ideal,, some friends threw on for my other friend and we viedo tape it for her, made game of you guess what it is. and had all fun,, she loved it, and viedo tape opening it and we had another party then

I really wouldn't know :) I kinda hope to get by without attending one. My kids are 14 and 16, both boys. I think my wife had a shower held by a friend from work, but I don't really remember. Glad you found a way to make it work.
