I have a couple Nokias.
Wanna buy a Blackberry?
Besides, I treasure/value my privacy......if there's an emergency, people know they can reach me by e-mail or regular phone....otherwise, it's probably not important. I'm sure I will get laughed at for my feelings, but oh well.
I've been without, and really liked it (like Nora, I like my privacy), but consulting requires accessibility.
Personally, a few years back I was on a solo road trip very far from home, & my cell phone got rained on & broke. I had a hell of a time getting a replacement from the local Cingular store. I was totally freaked out at the prospect of being alone, far from home, on the road, with no way to get in touch with ANYONE!!
Anyway, I have one cell phone, but 2 lines. I got a local line a few years ago, but my "main" line is an out of state number I have had for around 8 years. I think I am going to cancel my other line when the contract runs out in June!
Our son has our 2 old ones (2 from me and 2 for my husband) they can't call out unless it's 911 and they are just for games and toys for him.
One that works, and my old two in a drawer somewhere. LOL
I keep the phone off when I'm driving. If I need to talk with someone, I wait until I can pull into a parking lot somewhere.
If I could, I wouldn't even use it for emergencies, but there are fewer and fewer pay phones anywhere today. Makes it hard to connect if you're traveling. Of course, we used to use CB radios for emergencies, and sometimes I'm tempted to go back to that.
I hate cell phones. I think they should be turned off when you're in public, in the car, in the grocery store, the doctor's office, etc. No one is so important that they have to have 24/7 availability.
I disagree with Marilyn about nobody being important enough that they need to be reached 24/7. My husband is a volunteer firefighter and an EMT (along with his regular job). I would say that being able to reach him at any time is pretty important! The pagers they issue only work in town, and since we live 20 miles from the nearest place to buy groceries...
