Dennis Turner, introducing Terry Eagleton, in his 2008 lecture Faith and Reason--He summarizes previous Eagleton lectures in response to the "Ditchkins" critique of Christianity and religion in general:
"The better critique of institutional Christianity is found in the Gospels"
"The best form of critique is the autocritique which emerges from within the thing that is criticized."
These statements have the effect of arbitrarily limiting the domain of discourse with respect to the traditions under critical examination; I propose--simply--that they are just not true.
