That's right--today is square root day, a day more rare than Leap Day (Leap Year), because ther are only nine in a century (the last Square Root Day being 2/2/2004, Groundhog Day, which is even more rare, the next one not for another 95 years). The next Square Root Day is not until 4/4/2016.
So how does one celebrate Square Root Day? For us non-math buffs, here are some suggestions: cutting your root veggies into squares, or making food into the shape of a square root symbol, square dancing, rooting for your favorite team, teaching your kids square knots or how to play 4-square, touch-up your roots, be a square (ha-ha), research your roots (geanology), or maybe skip your root canal (unless absolutely necessary :). At http://www.dipity.com/timeline/Square-Root-Day , there is a collection of 41 various videos (music, comedy, etc.) in honor of this day.
As an added incentive to show your Square Root Spirit, you could win $339 for having the biggest Square Root Event! Ron Gordon, founder of the day, and PR man for this rare day, is sponsoring a contest. Just send your Square Root celebration photo entries to rgordon@seq.org or mail them to Ron Gordon at P.O. Box 5133, Redwood, CA 94063...and don't forget to get the square plastic drinking glasses for your shindig! :)
