So, I'm considering using cloth diapers at least part of the time with the new baby. I can't believe how much money I've spent and garbage bags I've filled with disposable diapers for Sam. I hear they've come a long way with cloth diapers. Since my mother-in-law stays with us to take care of the kids and they don't leave the house much, I think we could get away with using cloth most of the time, though having disposables on hand for overnight and trips out of the house.
Your experiences?

She would pay for a diaper service for 6 months OR she would buy me a used washing machine (we didn't have one) a couple of pairs of plastic pants for the baby and 3 dozen cloth diapers.
Naturally, I chose the washer and diapers because that would mean that I would have a washer to wash my husband's and my clothes with as well.
Disposable diapers were just coming out at that time (1975) and the hospital gave me a few in a little "gift bag" to bring home. I did buy a few boxes in the ensuing 2 years for overnight trips, etc. but, for the most part, I laundered all of my daughter's diapers until she was potty trained at about 2 years old.
I was positively MANIC about changing her... If I was in doubt about whether or not she was actually wet (sometimes, in those little plastic pants, you can't tell whether or not what you're feeling is perspiration or "wetness"), I'd change her anyway. During the first couple of months, I was washing a load of diapers about every other day.
I didn't have a dryer so I dried all the clothes on a clothesline outside in the back yard and, one time, I counted 32 diapers on the clothesline at once (almost the whole 3 DOZEN)! That was just TWO DAYS WORTH!! LOL! I know that I was probably "obsessing" but I just couldn't BEAR the thought of her getting diaper rash or anything like that due to me being lackadaisical about changing her.
I often shake my head in bewilderment these days over the rampant use of disposable diapers by young mothers... Not only does that practice fill up our landfills (and, worst of all, I have seen used disposable diapers beside the road where people just throw them out of the car or something -- YUCK!) but I don't see how people AFFORD it! In my opinion, it's a wasteful and unnecessary practice.
The most important thing I found was a diaper liner really helped to keep diaper rash away and made it so easy to dispose of the poopy diaper. The urine diapers just got rinsed in the toilet or tub and then got thrown in the big diaper pail. I also used a product called Biz back then to soak the stained diapers.
Do the still sell plastic pants to wear over the cloth diapers. I haven't seen them in years. That would be my only concern.
I think cloth is healthier, cheaper and much better for the environment. Good luck. You will change diapers more often and over night you may want to use disposable diapers since they hold more. Just a thought.
I can't believe how much $ I've saved by not buying disposables. We've used them occassionally when my son was sick and having like 12 dirty diapers a day. I got tired of rinsing the cloth ones out....BTW a diaper sprayer is a great thing if you use cloth...google it. I hate the days I use sposies because he almost always leaks out! feel free to private message me with any ?
