How do you keep cats out of your plants and from digging in freshly dug soil?

Do you know any hints or tips to keep cats from digging in your houseplants and using freshly dug soil as a kitty litter box? My dh is doing some gardening and the neighbors cats think his newly planted garden is the perfect place to come and dig. We also have a big planter they like to dig in, too.

I am not sure, but I may have read in the past that you can use things like pepper or citrus peels to keep them away. Please share any tips that have worked for you.

 

 

Lucky is sniffing my plants. The cats don't bother these Elephants ears plants.

make them their own place to eat grasses, and dig. Make a planter then get some bird seed and sprinkle, and watch carefully, when the seed sprouts, put it where the kitties can enjoy

Cayenne pepper should do the trick. And not just a modest sprinkle. I mean a real thick covering all over the ground. I had to do this when we lived in CA and neighborhood cats kept using my flower bed near the house for a litter box.

I wish I knew. I don't think you can. Nothing stops my cat. Shoot he still chases stinkbugs after getting maced in the face and eyes so many times.

The cats in my neighborhood don't seem to bother my garden too much.

My question is ~ "How do you teach dog owners to pick up after their pooch?"

My beloved poodle did this too! He took his paw and swiped it across the dirt quickly and then wagged his tail. To put a stop to his monkeyshines, I put those plastic trays over the dirt. I had to cut it to accomodate the stems of the plant.

Ok here are some ways to get the cats out of your garden, I've used all of these in different parts of my garden and they all work. you can also plant these plants around what your planting and it will keep the cats away they are. Rue, Lavender,geranium, thyme, pennyroyal, also you can get some Mothballs I would put them in the dirt about inch or you cayenne pepper or ammonia.

Thanks for the tips. If I plant geraniums, do I need a bunch of them? Do you think they would survive the heat here in Az? I have never grown them before.

Linda.....I think you should get a pair of kittens so they can play together. Then you need to get a digital camera so you can post kitty pictures.

The geraniums should grow fine there, Karen. I know we're cooler up here but it still gets plenty hot and I've planted them in the hot sun and they did just fine.
