This week in Bhawana's group, Zoomit, "R" is the favored letter. RB suggested that images of "reading, 'riting and 'rithmetic would more then fill the prompt. It just so happens I have wonderful images of my kindergardeners taking those first wobbly steps into the literacy world. Open the door and step right in....you will be amazed what goes on in a kindergarten classroom today.
We read big books....

and small ones too.

We reach this point by first learning to recognize our letters....

and then the sounds they make.

Everyday we write in journals and then we read back what we have written.

We create our own books and read them to the class.

In 'rithmetic, we learn about numbers...

We sort objects and then create graphs and compare quantities.

We learn to use a balance scale and compare weights as well as measure the length of objects using a non-standard measuring tool.

We create patterns using all sorts of things.

And yes, we learn all about geometry.

And that is how we spend our days in school.

Jan: I remember learning to read with Sally, Jane, etc. It was definitely a wonderful experience being able to really decode all those symbols.
Thanks Sandy.
That's the thing about kindergarten...they are ALL excited to be there so teaching can be really fun. As for geometry, although I did well in high school with it (memorizing, of course), I never really understood it till I took some hands-on math courses with a Professor from Harvard.
If the environment is right, the tasks appropriate developmentally, all kids are excited about learning.
Ten stars!
I saw the prompt earlier in the week and actually started writing the article and uploading the pictures and then I got distracted these last few days. This afternoon, taking a break from doing report cards, I finished it for Bhawana.
I have great kids. Do you know they actually cheer when it's Journal Time! They also say they love math. The are just incredible. IF this is my last year in the classroom, it has proven to be a good one.
ROFL!
a colorful photos and I went in my flashback,too...recalling my childhood education..
