Dean Grose, the Republican mayor of Los Alamitos CA, is in hot water after sending out the following White House watermelon picture via his personal email. He superimposed a watermelon patch before the White House and the caption read “No Easter egg hunt this year”. After charges of racism, Grose has announced he will resign.
My Take: When I first saw the White House watermelon picture I didn’t actually understand why it was racist. After a few minutes on the internet I get it now, and though it was certainly a stupid thing to send around, I wonder if Grose should have to resign. This White House watermelon picture seems more of a case of bad taste than racism in my opinion.

His race did not come into it. Just his small pea brain was talked about a lot and his ability to use words that he made up. Spare me, please,we have so much more to do than sit and make cartoons that are racist. I think something to remembered if the race card is to be played President Obama is not just black or white he is a mix. OK now who will play the other race cards? There are more than one out of his ancestry to be played. How about respect for what ever race he is and support him. I a beginning to think our future depends on it and from reading what other countries think so do they. By the way I am caucasian, and very ashamed of the person who made this cartoon. And I a not really sure posting it here isn't just a way to get it out there.

To pretend he didn't know the picture is any of the above is disingenuous at best. His response reminds me of the schoolyard bullies of my childhood. When anyone (including the target) objected to their harassment, they'd always say "Hey, I was only kidding". As though that made it ok....
There is no place in civilized discourse for such boneheadedness. If the outcry against this stupidity seems to be holding him to a higher standard, so what? Grose wanted this position; part of the job description is that the occupant will be held to the highest standards of behavior. Grose deserves to be fired; he's getting off easy being allowed to resign.
Oh, but you can, Lisa. The fun week we've just had proves that. We have a major metropolitan newspaper publishing a cartoon that advocates the assassination of the president, while comparing him to a chimpanzee (another racist stereotype), and now another tired racist stereotype making the rounds. It turns out that criticism of public officials is constitutionally protected. There are no legal ramifications for this. This kind of idiocy and bad taste can go on unabated as long as our society is willing to put up with it.

Should he have lost his job? I don't know, but I am not going to fight for him to get it back. He had very poor judgement, he paid the price. Republicans have had a number of these incidents vis-a-vis obama, do we recall Barack the magic negro? Dems are not immune to this. I can't think of an example right off- oh yeah I can. Remember when jesse jackson thought the mike was turned off, and he muttered that he wanted to cut Obama's **** off? Yeah, that was stereotyping too: he was viewing Obama as an Uncle Tom.
The truth is, Obama is not small enough to fit into the boxes that certain people have prepared to stuff him into. This will become clear in time.
It is not ok, Vickey. What is done about it is really up to us, Vickey. It's ok to challenge racial stereotyping anywhere it exists. It's a form of bullying and if you don't stand up to the bully things don't get better.
