Giant Stingray caught in Thailand with photo

A giant stingray weighing in at 771 lbs was caught off Thailand by Ian Welch yesterday. The giant stringray easily crushed the "largest freshwater fish ever caught" record previously held by a catfish weighing in at 646 lbs.  Coincidentally the Giant Stingray happened to be pregnant.

Catching the giant stingray was an ordeal that last over 90 minutes but Ian Welch felt it was well worth it. At 7ft long and 7ft wide with a 10ft tail, the giant stringray needed 13 men to lift it from the water.

Welch commented "As a lifelong angler and biologist it is great my passions have come together."

This is sad. I bet they eat it. How horrible that it was 90 minutes of trauma for the poor thing. I'm a diver and swim with rays often - they are beautiful, peaceful creatures. Imagine how old this one must be at that size.

I'd say that ole catfish still holds the record. I mean, this was technically more than one stingray. :)

That just irks me . . . I really hope they return it to its habitat before it succumbs from being held captive in a kiddie pool.

If anybody reads the full news article about it, they caught the stingray as part of a tagging program. She was tagged & observed, then released back into the river that they caught her from!

Actually, most stingrays are freshwater.

And I can't believe that! The thing's huge!
