"A surplus became an excuse to transfer wealth to the wealthy instead of an opportunity to invest in our future."

I also liked when he said if we didnt like the job he does elect someone else in 4 years.
I was very impressed.
Bush came into power and started the "REDISTRIBUTION OF WEALTH"
He made the middle class poor, and enriched the rich.
Well we still have to hear the republican bs.
Oh and it wasn't a state of the union address as he is the new president and his first state of the union address will be next year.
Have to make it happen ...................make the committment to put that 60th butt in the seat. Just DO it!
And as far as their rising star, Bobby Jindal, the Governor of Louisiana, Republicans better keep looking. He looked and sounded just plain silly, unready to face the real problems facing the American people.
I'd rather he be amazingly effective....which is unlikely, He can't spend the trillions of dollars he plans on spending, raise taxes on the taxpayers who create jobs in our country (these people have been showing their faith in the Obama plan by their lack of activity in the stock markets as of late) and cut the deficit all at the same time.
It just ain't going to happen.
I'd have to agree
"That about says it all."
Well actually it doesn't, it is a very disingenous statement!
Which shows Obama to be nothing about change but a continuation of being a party politician as all politicians are.
The development of the Transportation Security Administration and Home Land Security in response to the danger that 9/11 brought to light cost this country a lot of money and was authorized by the entire congress Democrat and Republican alike!
If anything the Bush Tax cuts which were voted in but did not go into effect until the next year saved this country from going ito a full blown recession due to the loss of jobs due to 9/11, the airlines, the travel industry, the hospitality industry was devistated.
Our economy began to fail Before Bush left office due to the subprime mortage crisis not due to his tax cuts BTW the blame for the subprime mortage crisis can be laid squarely at the feet of both Democrats and Republicans.
So unless your just a Bush hater you can't lay the blame only on him (that is if you have even one foot planted in reality).
What a crock of BS. Deregulation and elimination of oversight has been long sought by the filthy GOP since they worship greed. They got it...it's their baby. And like the rest of the dirty bathwater, the GOP can get tossed out too.
Yeah...the Bushie idea of Slap-side economics has created how much unemployment??
Dan, talk about disingenuous! I bet you sat there last night , squinching your butt cheeks, trying to make yourself believe everything that (the very odd) Governor Bobby Jindahl said after Obama's address.
I'm pretty sure that even when Obama's plan works to get our country out of the Bush induced mess, you'll sit there, still squinching, and say it didn't work.
People like you are dinosaurs, Dan. Either put some positive energy into the world or shut the hell up.
The American public was scammed on this, and apparently some still are. In retro, the most humorous and tragic recollection of all this I can think of is Bush running around saying the average tax cut would be $10,000. Well, apparently the public couldn't grasp the concept of 100 of their neighbors in a room with Warren Buffett and having a high average -- until Warren walks out of the room. But like so many policies, Bush sold them packaged in deception. At least now, we have a lot less phony PR about whatever we do as a nation. Oh, there's still plenty of PR, but not nearly as much.
AMEN, Don!!!!
I actually wrote a post on this topic a bit back where I compared the Bush and Obama eras as the people emerging from Alice in Wonderland's rabbit hole where the world was upside down.
If you wish to read it, you can see it at Emerging From The Rabbit Hole
For all those folks who survived the Carter Administration "Welcome back Carter". And for those too young, you will get a great life experience what inflation and stagflation are.
PT Barnum had nothing on these clowns.
We already know from the last 8 years. Carter was never that bad.
No Child Left Behind
More like "No child left a dime."
The one thing I can blame the Democrats for is sheepishly going along with what the Republicans wanted. I, too, am not happy with Nancy Pelosi, but I hope Obama isn't like her.
I don't expect all of the President's plans to work, but at least some thought is given to regular citizens.
We need to look around and see what we can be do personally in our communities to help out even if just in small ways. I think Obama is inspiring us to try to be better.
I removed the name, because my comment isn't specific to that one person (although it fits him). If a person has no ability to understand what a genius says, wouldn't disingenuous be the most s/he could take from it?
There was a record surplus when Bush took office and a record deficit when he left. Where did all the money go? We destroyed and then rebuilt Iraq on no-bid contracts, but it did not get invested in America, did it? No. That would be "socialism." The rich got richer and the middle class stagnated or shrunk in a cruel, reverse Robin Hood. Google distribution of wealth in America if you don't believe me.
All the while, the GOP is moaning over the reduction of rich in the country.
Hmmmm...who would you rather have in charge of things?
For all those folks who survived the Carter Administration "Welcome back Carter"."
Karl Marx has a TRAIN??? Suh-WEEET! President Carter's back?? HELL YEAH!!!
Oh wait! That's right! He DID want alternative energy developed until Ronny Raygun canceled all that to build his star wars SDI system....which has never been used. At this point, Karl Marx, even though he's dead...would be better that Booshie was! Certainly a better listener.
Regards,
Doyle I <~~~~~
Maybe the rich should wise up if they want to stay rich in the long term. Trickle down is bunk. It's really trickle up and it starts with a strong middle class and decent jobs. Maybe they shouldn't all be shipped off shore to the lowest bidder.
And to this day they still can't figure out how to get it to work. Talk about a total waste of research funding.
And about Jimmy Carter, so many Republicans are laboring under the delusion that R. Reagan brought down the Soviet Union. Check it out - it was Jimmy Carter. And JC did get the Camp David accords in place, the technical aspects of which have stood to this day, despite the ongoing trouble in middle east.
When was there Republican support?
I hope President Obama keeps the American people safe. If he tries to appease the terrorists and bad people in the world, I hope it doesn't backfire.
It's too late when our homeland gets bombed, or an overseas military base, or an overseas embasey gets bombed.
Socialism doesn't work. People who give up freedom for a promise of security end up with neither.
And Winston... we already gave up freedom for security. It's called the PATRIOT Act. Half of our Constitutionally guaranteed freedoms (Bill of Rights) is gone, because the fear of the public was exploited by those in power during the early part of this decade. It's not about socialism, it's about a misplaced ideal of global domination, when the world doesn't want to be dominated by us.
Doyle,
There is plenty of footage of Frank and plenty of other Democrats resisting the Bush Administrations attempt to excert additional controls over freddie and fannie.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_MGT_cSi7Rs&feature=related
Sorry my myopic Bush hater the Dems are at fault for our current crisis just as much.
"Yeah...the Bushie idea of Slap-side economics has created how much unemployment??"
Only if you continue your delusional thinking that the Democrats have no responsibility in the current crisis can you foist the entire fault on Bush.
You must lift both feet from reality inorder to come to that conclusion.
BTW, make sure you watch to the end of the youtube video where you will see President Bill Clinton placing some of the blame on the congress for rebuffing both the Republicans and his efforts to regulate fanni and freddie.
"Danee, you have a karma problem. Go back to your cave!"
My goodness Julia, what a well constructed argument! LOL!
The fixation with Fannie and freddie is the excuse the GOP use to blame the dems but they were the ones pushing the Bill that deregulated the banks and allowed this bundles of mortgages to be made and sold as financial instruments, then the derivative comes and they all were gambling with no insurance or guarantees.
A big house of cards with FIAT currency blown out of proportion.
The oversight was missing, the market in 2002 was flooded with cash below the inflation rate and everyone maning the banks were shopping for loans with plenty of cheap money from the feds.
To simplify this and blame on single thing for the crash is the talking of a very uninformed person
I think the lies of a party who does not live accordingly to their ideology are obvious.
The republicans have not balance a budget since Nixon and they still say they are fiscal conservatives. You must be pretty stupid after 50 years to believe them.
I agree with the small government idea but they do not and they have proven that over the years but they kick a lot of dust and people get blinded by the strong braggadocio approach and actually believe them.
The politicians that don't want to do the right thing for this country because of party rules, money for their campaigns etc. should step down now and bring someone in that wants to do the right thing, even if it is not popular within party line. It is time to think about the majority of the citizens and now how they are going to be re-elected.
I am sure there are few of them we have brains, actually I think they use group think. No one moves unless they are all together and that will loose them their seat.
I think they are missing the fact the country is progressive not regressive, at least 65% percent of the thinking informed and aware citizenry.
methinks you have no well constructed arguments which is why you respond in traditional liberal fashion, of kill the messenger.
lea and... c,
"The agency neglected to examine whether borrowers could make the payments on the loans that Freddie and Fannie classified as affordable. From 2004 to 2006, the two purchased $434 billion in securities backed by subprime loans, creating a market for more such lending. Subprime loans are targeted toward borrowers with poor credit, and they generally carry higher interest rates than conventional loans."
"Fannie and Freddie finance about 40 percent of all U.S. mortgages, with $5.3 trillion in outstanding debt. Owned by private shareholders but chartered by Congress, they are exempt from state and local taxes and receive an estimated $6.5 billion-a-year federal subsidy because they can borrow money more cheaply than other investors. In return, they are expected to serve "public purposes," including helping to make home buying more affordable."
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/06/09/AR2008060902626_pf.html
No they did not make all the loans.
And as I said I do not excuse the Republicans as some of you seem to be trying to excuse your Democrats and place all the blame on President Bush
And it's bailouts, John. I would point to FDRs programs working quite well. What doesn't work is trickle down economics and deregulation of finance institutions. Monopolies have their downsides as well.
There is nothing wrong with debt, John. That's what George W. said when he was running up the tab. If we are going to have it, I'd much prefer it be spent on building up people over here than blowing up people over there. That's just me. And the majority who voted for Obama.

The Dead Tree Theory
By GAIL COLLINS
"Whenever a president gives a major address, like the one Barack Obama delivered to Congress this week, the opposition party delivers a rejoinder. Which American citizens always ignore. Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal’s speech was, therefore, a kind of triumph. So bad, people actually paid attention!
"We will pass over Jindal’s delivery, which sounded a little like a junior high schooler’s entry into the Chamber of Commerce “I Speak for Fiscal Restraint” contest. The content was the thing: a message to the nation that the Republicans were not going to have anything important or useful to say about the current economic crisis.
"Absent any deep thoughts, the Republicans are going to complain about waste . . ."
Sorry, but the idiotic Republicans did not practice what they preach.
Cheney said it too.
But how dare the Dems run up debt when they are using it for public welfare.
That is, of course, relying on the assumption that Republicans can even think.
Sometimes it sucks to have facts.
Not for tattoos folks
