Do you workout with your family?- When my family comes to our home for the holidays, one of our traditions is to walk the dogs. The dogs are beside themselves with excitement and the people get to walk off the calories from dinner.

What are your favorite activities to do together?- Walking the dogs, canoeing, swimming, walk

What are your favorite healthy meals to make for your family?- grilled chicken, deluxe salads, veggies from dad's garden, fruit based desserts

My favorite workout is on the red. I love to do the boxing part. The really neat thing is that you can measure yourself daily and tell the difference. My favorite meal would be what we had tonight...lol. Baked tilapia with rice and a veggie. I love it and its good for you.

These health chats are always very fun to participate in. I'm going to go ahead and answer the questions straight-away so I can engage in plenty of back and forth:

* Do you workout with your family? What are your favorite activities to do together?

My husband and I enjoy going for long walks together. Our proudest was what we dubbed the "Tri-State Tour." We live in the northwestern tip of Illinois and set out one day to walk to Wisconsin. We ended up walking into Wisconsin - across the Wisconsin Mississippi River into Iowa - through downtown Dubuque to the Julien Dubuque bridge - across the Julien Dubuque Bridge over the Mississippi and back home. It ended up being over eight miles!

* What are your favorite healthy meals to make for your family?

I love a lasagna with veggie meat! I am also really into making whole wheat spaghetti now - the price on whole grain foods has really dropped, so I can make whole wheat instead of regular for only a few cents more these days.

I often walk the development with my son whom is in a power chair, it gets me moving and gets him a chance to take in some fresh air. He just love my home made meatballs and sauce and nowadays use the Barilla whole grain pastas. When Spring gets here we love walking the State Parks that are in our area as a family.

My husband has tried to do some of my workout vids with me, but he can never keep up with them and usually makes me break pace from laughter.

However, we do usually lift weights on the same day, and on the occasions I've bench-pressed, he has spotted for me.

Our meals could be healthier too. When I do cook at home, I tend to cook healthy, low fat foods, like pasta with a salad, or baked chicken recipes. Unfortunately, we eat a lot of prepared food, more than I'd like, due to time and energy constraints. It's a work in progress.

"""""I try to avoid red meat. I use turkey bacon and burgers.

Nastacia M.,""""

I have never tried turkey burgers - I usually just go soy and I never fail to be surprised at how versatile it is! Is turkey bacon as good as real bacon (I know it can't be the same - but some of the foods are as good, but in a different way after you get used to them).

Kudos on being able to keep yourself motivated -- that is a tough job in and of itself sometimes!

You can buy ground turkey in the grocery and use it in place of just about everything that you would use hamburger meat in. So even the easy, in a crunch meals can be healthier.

I really trying to walk more but it's very rainy at this time of year in northern CA so need to look into some other alternatives. Has anyone every done water aerobics? I'm considering that as an addition to my small exercise regimen.

When I lived in LaCrosse, WI there were several community gardens...I've never participated but I knew a lot of people who did!

I've been thinking about getting a tub to put out on our front porch in the spring for Herbs....We get maximum sunlight so I suppose I could grow anything that would sprout in a tub.

Yeah...that might be a bit hard. The only thing I could think of would be that it would need to be a small garden with some kind of fence to keep the dogs out. Or a potted garden. But I'm not sure how roudy or big your dogs are!

I'm a breast cancer survivor and one of the strong pieces of advice I get to prevent a recurrence is exercise and better food choices. The food choices took a while to make some changes but as someone who never "had" to exercise, it's like torture to me until I get started and motivated.

If you keep your out in the papers...sometimes you can find a real deal on organics. Our Hyvee stores (a chain here in the midwest) all have "health markets" in a corner of their store and this houses all of the specifically organic things. Each month they have a health market magazine and flyer. The fliers always advertise their specials for the whole month, and the magazine has coupons (usually) inside. I always pick up the flier and keep it for the entire month in case I end up at Wal-Mart (then I can save at two stores instead of one). Hyvee also has one day a month where you can get 10% off of everything in the health market.

There Soy milk is on sale at 2 quarts for a dollar - we've been stocking up so the 10% off day can really add some value - its like getting some free!

Thanks, Michelle,

I have thought about putting one in my side yard, but there were tomatoes growing there when i moved in and as soon as they were ripe...a neighbor took them. I found out he thought he should be able to take them since i bought the house from his kid. i would have let him have them if he had asked, but he didn't...

So....I'll figure something out:)

My husband just got a great book from Amazon.com called Nourishing Traditions and it details great recipes and wonderful nutritional advice. We've been fermenting some veggies to help with increasing my immune system. Wow! We've done with carrots, grated ginger, and beets. A homemade salsa...

I wouldn't be here if not for healthy food. I had bad reactions every time I ate and then we discovered once I got rid of additives, preservatives and dyes my breathing improved which allowed my health to improve.

I have to get back on the eating healthy bandwagon. I need the family to come along--it's hard to do while everyone around you is doing something else.

The winter months do not help with the exercise situation...neither does the economy. i had to let my gym membership lapse in order to save a little more...just in case a lay-off comes my way.

We don't have trees but I think that is a yet as we have been talking about them more lately. Satsuma Mandarian Oranges are grown around here plus peaches, nectarines, and plums so I think eventually we'll plant our own.

I actually have several types of exercising equipment in my home. I alternate them around. The ones I use the most is The Total Gym, The Ab Lounge, Tony Gazette's Glider, and Jake's Thigh and Hip Master. Plus I alternate my other equipment from time to time.

Your story is amazing, Trish A. As time goes on and more scientific studies are done, there is no telling all of the simple cures that a modified diet will provide.

I've never been really sick...but I've found that eating white flour, enriched really makes my skin erode. Growing up I had horrible acne, but it stands to reason because we always ate white flour. In Louisiana everything was fried with a white flour coating. Since I nipped in the bud, my face is much better off.

Jennifer,

I remember going to a WW (Weight Watchers) meeting a few years ago when the leader told someone that you since you're the cook (ass-umption) you can do what you want and if the family wants to eat dinner....

Nastacia ~ That is so funny! You might have to put a sign up with your garden too! LOL!

Diane~ I cut up mango and cucumber and julienned jicama. Then I diced up a pepper for a bit of heat and cilantro and seasoned with lemon juice and a bit of salt. It was really good. Very much a healthy Mexican dish!

My husband and I work out at the gym together. As for my children, we went on vacation to activity based resorts, they went to Scout camps, were part of Scouting which has a large active lifestyle component), and they were on sports teams. I also cook almost all of our meals, and buy lots of organic vegetables, poultry and meats, beans, etc. Little salt or oil added.
