I was just reading a comment someone left on another blog. The comment said it's far too expensive to go green that there's really no way to save. This just blew my mind. After I recovered from the shock, I thought how can this person not see the savings?
Going green or being eco-friendly is all about saving. If you look at the big picture, being eco-friendly will help us save the most important thing we have our environment.
But it's really not about the big picture. Think of your own home as your environment. Now it's not so overwhelming and you can easily see where you can save.
You don't have to rush out and by a Hybrid. Start by doing the little things. Turn off the water when you brush. Shorten your showers. Wash clothes in cold water. And gather rainwater for plants. Now, if you put just a couple of these ideas in place you'll easily see a saving on your water bill.
Turn off the lights when you leave the room. Shut down and turn off the surge protector when you're done with the computer. Switch to CFL's. Pick one night a week to unplug everything you can before you go to bed. Only use the dryer when necessary otherwise hang up your clothes to dry. Turn down your heat to 68 and turn up the AC to 79.
I do all of this and despite a 25% increase from my electric company my bill is 15% less now than it was a year ago. Now that's really saving.
For a cleaner home use vinegar, lemon juice, and baking soda instead of commercial cleaners. Use eco-friendly laundry detergents. Substitute Twenty Mule Team Borax and lemon juice for chlorine bleach. Just doing these things saves me about $15.00 a week on household supplies. That's a huge savings in a year.
I know we've heard all this before. But, sometimes it just takes a little reminding. And it does take a little effort. Think locally as in your own home. There are a lot of little things you can do that will add up to big savings for your wallet and the environment. If you just try.
