In appreciation for participation, I will randomly select one name from the list of those who respond and send them a $10 Borders certificate, either through the USPS or via email - whichever is preferred. The deadline for responding to be included in the drawing is Sunday, March 1st.

No, each member puts a book into a hat and we pick one out each time. When they slips run out, we all submet the next one. The person whose book it is is responsible for moderating/leading the discussion for that month.

Reading a graphic novel, something I never would have done otherwise, and enjoying it.
Debating (in that context and with some more pop lit stuff) what qualified as literature.

I guess what's most memorable for me is that after nearly twenty years (not even most of it was devoted to book-ing), we still remember the books and refer to them. I read books that ordinarily I wouldn't have picked up. Of note: The Killer Angels by Michael Shaara--about the Civil War and West with the Night by Beryl Markham--about life in Africa, and The Remnant by Mary Lacroix--a historical novel of the Essence and the Biblical Mary mother of Jesus.

Describe (if you can) a memorable experience from a book club meeting.
answer: One of my book groups (I participate in four) once read The Giver, the young adult novel by Lois Lowry. One member opined that the hero, who is struggling up a mountain in freezing cold at the end of the book, reaches safety and warmth after the book ends. Another member fixed her with a steely gaze and replied "he dies, Gerry, he dies".
this became a running joke of realism vs. optimism in that group.

But, my favorite moments are when the book begins. The moment is heavy with excitement. I'm so eager to read it and see if I like it.
This is so cool!! Yeah!
