It has been a very cold, windy, snowy winter here in Massachusetts. As I shoveled out after every snowstorm all I could think about was come February vacation, a week-long trip to Florida would be divine. Stash the layers of clothing, the blue LL Parka, the Ugg boots and pack a carry-on with just two bathing suits, a couple of shorts, a few sleeveless shirts and a pair of sandals and in three hours I would be in Tampa. Sounded mighty fine to me.
In November, my brother-in-law Fred had asked me when my February vacation fell this year because he wanted to take my sister Fran and me to Florida to see their new great grandchild, Hannah. As yet, no one in our family had see the new progeny born last spring. Last spring and summer, both Fran and I were extremely busy with our Mother.
A year and a half ago, I wrote an article "Melissa's Story (A Story about a Treasure Given Away at Birth) about Hannah's Mom. Melissa's biological father was Tevin, Fran's second son. At the time of Melissa's birth, both Tevin and Melissa's biological Mom, Lisa were seventeen and much too young to be parents. It was decided the baby should be put out for adoption. In 2002, Melissa wanted to meet her biological father's family (Tevin had died at the age of 28) and so she came north to Massachusetts. As soon as we saw her, we knew she was ours....she looked just Tevin. In July of 2007, our family all went down to Melissa's wedding and now eighteen months later we would be seeing Melissa's baby girl. Though pictures have been exchanged throughout the past year, nothing beats actually seeing and holding our new baby. In the end, four of us made the trip....Fran and Fred, the great grandparents, Alyssa, Fran's twenty-two year old granddaughter and myself.
We arrived in Tampa at 9:30 the morning of the 15th and headed north to Brooksville and Spring Hill, stopping along the way for brunch at my favorite spot, Tarpon Springs, the Sponge capital of the world and a thriving Greek American community. Besides the food at Tarpon Springs, the Victorian architecture also draws our attention. By the lake, we fell in love with this Grand Old Lady. Talking with the neighbors we learned that this house was on the market two years ago for 2.1 million dollars....now because of the economy, the asking price was $975,000. What a bargain! Lol

Then it was off to the beach with Melissa, her husband Sean and of course, Babycakes!

That night we ate at the Red Lobster where Baby Hannah was most excited with the large fish in the aquarium.

The following day Melissa gave us a tour of the town where she grew up and of course we had to have lunch at her favorite little boutique restaurant. I found lots of images in the boutique including some lovely red hats!

On Wednesday morn, we traveled over to Disneyland and stayed at the Polynesian Resort for four days. We were excited....this would be Hannah's first trip to the Magic Kingdom.

Checking in to the Polynesian Resort...I was in charge of the bags.

My favorite attraction in Disney is "It's a Small, Small World" so I couldn't wait to go on the ride. Long ago, with Will at Disneyland, I think I must have done this ride at least five times. I couldn't wait to see Hannah's reaction.....

Within seconds of boarding the little boat that winds its way around the countries of the world, Hannah fell fast asleep.

So that is how I spent my February vacation....creating love ties with the new generation.

Hugs and blessings - S.
That's what life is all about...sharing happiness with the ones you love.
I felt GOOD in the sun...it was so refreshing to run around in shorts, sleeveless blouse and sandals. 'Course I overdid it the first day in the sun....looked like a lobster that first night...but by the next day I was as brown as a berry!
It was a grand ole time. What a change from the dreary winter we have been having.
BTW, St. Joy is gonna want to meet Hannah, I think. Steelers fans like to stick together.
It was a blast re-connecting with Melissa, seeing her new home and baby and just hanging out with everyone. This summer, Melissa is planning to come to Mass. to hang out with us....course we don't have Disney here...but then again, we have the Cape Cod National Seashore.
We did have a blast...you know where ever I go, I manage to have fun.
It was a wonderful respite from the cold north...so nice to stick my toes in white beach sand.
I just loved watching Fran and Fred interact with their first GREAT grandbaby! Imagine my sister being a GREAT Grandmother....Wow....almost hard to believe.
Papa has a doctor's appointment today....so I have a family sick day.
Our nearest Red Lobster is 70 miles north.
Glad you had good weather and a fine time.
I'm already missing the Florida sunshine.......
Summertime (during winter) and the living is easy when creating love ties with the new generation.
This winter was much too harsh for me....I needed an escape badly. Being an outside kind of person, this trip was PERFECT.
I see that you dropped in....your great grandbaby is most priceless. As for the Victorian on Manatee Lagoon....when you buy it, save a bedroom for me. Just think, every winter we all could escape shoveling snow.
I always knew from the moment we saw Melissa her first day of life that she would find us. It was a long road and at times some people doubted that she would return to us....but she did. Her adoptive parents were wonderful and they did a wonderful job raising Melissa. And now we can enjoy her, her husband Sean (who is just fantastic) and Baby Hannah.
Do you know I've never been in a Red Lobster before. Being so close to Plymouth (seven miles away), there's all kinds of fish shacks where we can go.
In more ways then one it was special. I only wish my Mom had stayed alive long enough to see her great great grand baby.
We had great weather...perfect for strolling around Epcot and Disney....and the water was warmer then the ocean in Mass in the summer. I did notice, most of the people in the water were from the north...lots of Michigan people!
Now you have faces to go with names....and images to go with things I talked about.
I LOVE, LOVE, Love "A Small, Small World". Several weeks ago I heard it was closed for renovations, so imagine my happiness when I saw it was open.
The music is still rolling around in my head. Am thinking of creating a slide show with that music for Hannah....now I just need to get the music.
" though the mountains are wide and the oceans divide, it's a small world after all..."
Funny thing....the Floridians thought 72 degrees was cold. We thought we were in the heat of summer.
I remember your article about Melissa. How neat that you got to see her little one now.
Hannah is adorable. I've always enjoyed "It's a Small World" but then that song lingers for weeks afterward!
The last time I was at Disney was 22 years ago. "A Small, Small World" is exactly the same.
Again I am am envious of you, that you got to have a bit of summer in the middle of winter. Looks like you had a great time. Disney is so much fun.
I hope you remembered to put your sunblock on!!
There is no better way that I can think of bob ;-)
What a gorgeous photo essay..and that little Hannah...what a beautiful baby!!
It's a Small World is one of my favorites still ;-) When we went a couple of years ago to take my 11 year old nephew he rolled his eyes when I suggested it, but he was fascinated once we got inside. Glad you had a good vacation break ;-) You were just down the road from us!
Ok enough of that - I loved the beach pictures - I'm such a beach lady...these were all great Bob - thanks for sharing. Salud
Thank you for sharing.
