I promised weekly McConnell watches. Unfortunately, he hasnÂ’t done enough this week to earn a full article of his own. So, in order to provide something worth reading, I am combining my McConnell watch with a John Yarmuth update.
Â
The Good
Â
After seeing so many complaints from other Gather members (mostly of the Republican persuasion) that politicians donÂ’t earn their salary, donÂ’t care about people, and donÂ’t know what theyÂ’re voting on or for, itÂ’s a pleasure to brag about Congressman John Yarmuth, who earns his salary (even though he donates it to charity), is and has been well informed on all issues for many years, and cares enough to stay informed and meet with us to share information and listen to concerns.
Here are a few things Congressman Yarmuth did this week that were not broadcast on C-span, so you might have missed them.
On Tuesday, he spoke at a “save the mountains” rally with Ashley Judd.
"One solar panel has 4,000 parts," Judd said. "Imagine the jobs that could create in eastern Kentucky." U.S. Rep. John Yarmuth (D-Louisville), who spoke before Judd, said, "There is light at the end of the tunnel. There are now more people employed in the wind power industry in the United States than there are in the coal industry.
On Thursday he visited a local health center, where he announced that, thanks to the stimulus package President Obama signed this week will increase the federal contribution to Kentucky’s Medicaid program from 70% to 76.2%
*The Kentucky Department of Education will also receive funding. "I am thrilled that our schools are going to get this extra funding," Yarmuth said. "Districts were facing huge cuts that would have decreased the quality of education in Kentucky and this should help them recover some of those cuts." This money will offset some of the costs NCLB didnÂ’t fund. "The federal government put some very strict requirements on the schools, particularly in Title I and special education, but did not fund it," Yarmuth said.
Â
*Overall, the $787 billion stimulus bill that Obama signed contains $105.9 billion for education.
Â
*Federal money totaling $6.83 million has been authorized for improvements at Louisville International Airport, U.S. Rep. John Yarmuth, D-3rd District, has announced.
(*bad, bad “pork” when Mitch McConnell talks out the Republican side of his face but good, good politicing and a reason to vote for him when he’s campaigning)
This morning, Saturday, he held a public information session to answer questions about the stimulus plan.
Tonight he joins ‘Green Convene’ (local leaders from politics, industry, academia and others working to promote public policies that support environmental sustainability) in a public event. (Are Saturdays considered overtime to those who think politicians are “working” only when the house is in session?)
Â
Miscellaneous News Bits from this week:
Democrats Revive Populist Caucus Populist Caucus members say they will demand that conditions on labor rights, environmental protection and other “fair trade” principles be incorporated in future trade deals.
Rep. John Yarmuth of Kentucky said a common motivation for the junior members joining the Populist Caucus is the sense that “the economy is not working for everybody.”
“We are very concerned about how the principles of economic justice are being thwarted by unbridled economic power,” he said.
Â
Hundreds of teens packed the convention center in downtown Louisville, looking for a way to make a buck.
“This is an indication of how serious the economy is right now. We have millions of people out of work. The unemployment rate is at 7.5% nationally and it’s probably going to 9 or 10%,” says Representative John Yarmuth, a democrat representing Kentucky’s third district.

The Bad
Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Kentucky, gets an approval figure of just 23 percent, with 51 percent disapproving his performance.
Senator McConnell has voiced his disapproval, disgust, diseverything with the stimulus bill, repeatedly. I’ve searched for his solutions to the problems we face, and found –
Republican leader U.S. Sen. Mitch McConnell and U.S. Rep. Geoff Davis were both out of their Washington, D.C. offices Tuesday and not available for comment on what type of industries might benefit from the Act within the state of Kentucky and specifically, within the Fourth Congressional District which includes the Buffalo Trace Region. MITCH MCCONNELL: There are two things that we think are essential. Number one we need to go right at the housing problem, thatÂ’s what started all of this. Think Progress
Â
In January, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) told ABC's This Week that much of the spending contained in the stimulus bill would have easily passed within an omnibus appropriations bill on a "bipartisan basis." However, McConnell is now waiting to review the omnibus before making any decisions on legislative strategy, including whether to propose scaling back some of the spending items that were funded in the stimulus package. Capital Hill Reports
Â
Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell offered this assessment of what he saw as wasteful spending: "A stimulus bill that was supposed to be timely, targeted and temporary is none of the above." Yakima Herald (See, IÂ’m looping everywhere.)

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell called the package [stimulus bill] "The Europeanization of America." Brattleboro Reformer
Â
Mitch McConnell, U.S. Senate minority leader, said recently that "we Republicans must get back to our base values."
Â
"This legislation was driven by the White House, House Democrats and the Senate Democrats," said Larry Sabato, political science professor at the University of Virginia. "McConnell is in a terrible position. The Democrats have a hand full of aces. He has a bunch of twos." From Kansas City.com (If he isnÂ’t talking, IÂ’ll just have to bring you what others are saying about him.)
Â
And embarrassing moment just for kicks:
Four Fridays ago, Sen. Mitch McConnell practically challenged hell to freeze over when he said, "I realize that if you told most people Mitch McConnell was down at the (National) Press Club hoping for bipartisanship, they'd tell you that's like an insurance agent hoping for an earthquake. Most people don't exactly view me as the Mr. Rogers of the Senate."
One week ago, it was an ugly day in their neighborhood as McConnell -- and his congressional GOP brothers and sisters -- shed the warm fuzzies in record time to blanket the House and Senate floors with votes of "no" to President Obama's stimulus plan. His local paper, The Courier Journal
That failure was more than sad. The lock-step mentality, manifested during a national crisis, was unconscionable.

From: A (Slim) Case for Preserving the Filibuster
Â
four years ago McConnell was ready to deploy the "nuclear option" to eliminate any filibuster threat to Bush judicial nominees with questionable qualifications. (per the A.B.A.)

IÂ’m sure theyÂ’ll show up, hopefully with Senator McConnellÂ’s suggestions for saving the country he helped to destroy.

Yep, the definition of pork could be something like "money given to projects that benefit people other than those you're talking to". :-)
I'm glad your honest politician is still around and plugging away at the system.
When does McConnell go up for re-election? Want somebody from MO helping? Let me know.
Blessed be, sistah sandy. Keep an eye on 'em.
Wilka
Representative Harold 'Hal' Rogers (KY) would not respond to Vote Smart questions:
"Representative Harold 'Hal' Rogers repeatedly refused to provide any responses to citizens on the issues through the 2008 Political Courage Test when asked to do so by national leaders of the political parties, prominent members of the media, Project Vote Smart President Richard Kimball, and Project Vote Smart staff."
"
I could move to Louisville, but someone needs to stay here and keep Roger's record in the public view.
According to wiki, the National Review referred to Rogers as "a national disgrace"
I think David K had a good analogy, though 'herding cats is the term I hear used most.
Aniko, I have to laugh at the duplicity over the definition of 'pork'. But I won't be laughing when he whips out all those federal dollars he brought back during his next campaign. I'll be bringing out every quote from these articles, which I hope to keep up. Your second comment made me consider why he might be having such a hard time "saying" anything right now. Without the Bush script, he would have to think for himself. Looks like he's latched on to that young guy (can't think of his name right now) and will probably start repeating him soon.
Not soon enough, Wilka. But we can sure use your help next time.
Poor you, Sarah. You deserve special recognition for staying there and keeping an eye on Rogers and Bunning. (I think my mind might have skipped of to Acapulco with yours. What is that guy's name?)
John, I'm with you. We've played nice too long already. It's time to work around the obstructionist brats.
Really, Lisa. The only thing worse than Mitch McConnell is Anne Northup. At least I believe he is a good guy, just lost. When she isn't being a Bush puppet, she's just a snake. To give you an idea, her neighbors welcomed (even invited) us to stand in front of her house on Sundays with signs.
Way to go, Sandy. I have an idea if you don't mind the plagiarism: let's have a "McConnell watch" from every state that has a venal know-nothing GOP senator. Our own John Kyl is a platitudenous asshat; John Cornyn and Kay Hutchinson fill the same bill in Texas (Hutchenson with platitudes, Cornyn with stupidity and venality.
See ya soon, Jim. Hope that's a nap and not a real crash you're talking about.
Gary, I like that idea. Why don't you start an "elephant watch" group? I'll try to keep a weekly McConnell update in there. Then, I can put my Yarmuth update in the Honest Politician group where it belongs.
YES! My husband and I have been screaming this at the Dems on TV since 2006. (Well, I've been screaming it--he does more of a baritone mutter) The Democrats need to make a big fat stink!
And in case anyone missed the phone number:(202) 224-2541. He needs our input.
Yarmuth sounds bright and progressive.
Unfortunately Kay Bailey Hutchinson is talking about resigning her Senate Seat to run for Governor... we (Texas) are soooo doomed!
Gee, like national healthcare, paid maternity leave, etc? That's a BAD thing?
I wonder how many of these Gov's who are saying they'll refuse the money offered to their state from the stimulus bill will REALLY refuse. And of those that do, how many will not be re-elected when their terms are up.
