We've seen them around the area, but today they came wandering through our yard. Javelinas are not common around here, but since the flooding we had in 2006, we have all kinds of animals we never had before. Oryx and other big animals make their home at White Sands Missile Range, which is about 15 or 20 miles from us as the crow flies.

This picture was taken in haste, so its not very good! I cropped it so there was less yard in the picture! I hope it is good enough for all to see!

I just moved up here from Arizona and had them and coyotes in the yard on a daily basis. The coyotes I didn't mind, but wild pigs were way too dangerous.
I've been able to sneak up on them in the desert, yell BOO or bark like a dog and they go running like little Buffaloes. I do make sure they have someplace to go besides back at me though, LOL. They have very poor eyesight, but great smell, etc. People hunt them here quite a bit. Thanks.
Take care.

They are distantly related to wild boars (without the major tusks). As was mentioned above, they are actually a member of the peccary family.
Despite nicknames of "The Hoggies," a javelina is not a pig, a feral hog or a wild boar. Although similar in appearance to a pig, it is a collared peccary. Along evolutionary lines, a collared peccary is a distant relative of wild pigs and hippos. Scientists know it as Pecari tajacu.
