A Day in New York City - Yesterday, or HOW I TURNED INTO SUPER BITCH

February 19, 2009 04:52 PM EST
views: 238 | rating: 9.1/10 (52 votes) | comments: 112

Yesterday.

Up early. Out early. Sun shining, but we knew a storm was coming. We had committed to seeing a college in New York, so we couldn't change plans on the spur of the moment. The beautiful cold, clear day gave way to rain. At least, it wasn't snow, we told ourselves.

The drive into New York wasn't bad. It has been worse. It will be worse, we told ourselves, coming back. More on that later.

We got into Greenwich Village nearly an hour before our appointment. Usually, when I go to New York (or anywhere), I am on my own schedule, not subject to the travel preferences of other people.

My idea of spending time is to sit in a Starbucks for an hour sipping coffee. None of you have been with me when I am low on caffeine. I wouldn't recommend you ever to try to be with me under those conditions.

My husband's idea was to walk around the village. It was raining, mind you. And quite cold. I had brought my winter coat (faux mink) and sneakers, rather than low heeled shoes. I just had a feeling we might be doing a ton of walking. Oh yeah.

My caffeine debt was building up something fierce. The walk was interesting. I hadn't spend much time in the village in a looong time.

Our appointment went well. A basic tour of a certain art school. However, the fashion program tour was not in Greenwich Village. It was in midtown, near Times Square. And it was full. And bound to start a few minutes after the first tour ended.

I said: Don't worry, I'll get us a cab. Pronto. I darted out in traffic in my faux mink and held up my right arm, to "HAIL a CAB." Two Yellow Cabs pointed right in my direction within a split second. The second cab, seeing I was already taking the first cab, sped off just as quickly as he sped to the curb. It took about 20 minutes to get to Midtown. Par for the course.

We found that nobody had showed up for the tour. We went on the Fashion tour, in the building where Project Runway is filmed.

Yes, I am talking about Parsons. The tour was very interesting.

My mood went south, progressively, minute by minute, the entire afternoon.

Caffeine debt. Big time.

It was now very cold and pelting huge drops of rain. We walked a block or three directly to Times Square, where we ate.

Waiter: How are things tonight witch yuz guys?
Me: Coffee. Now.
Husband: Just give her an IV drip.
Me. Please.
Waiter: I'm going to hold onto that line.
Me: And water all around. LARGE Coffee. Lots of cream. No sugar. Now. Please.

Waiter brought the coffee.

Husband: You are really bitchy.
Me: Caffeine withdrawal. Haven't had coffee since 7 a.m. Only one cup. I'll be better after my coffee.

Dinner was fine but tres cher.

Hubby had a marvelous idea for saving money: let's not take a cab, let's not take the subway, let's walk.

35 blocks back to the Village? No effin way.

Fine he said, take your own cab. No effin way.

Husband said: I thought you said you'd be less bitchy after the coffee.

Me: I lied. It is cold and raining. My coat and shoes are soaked, and I have a briefcase and a pocketbook to carry, and an umbrella. People keep poking my eyes out with their umbrellas.

I walked the distance. We got the car. I had a Red Bull and fell asleep in the car.

The drive back took 6 hours. It was snowing in Massachusetts.

But today, I am doing much better.

But as soon as I finish this article, I am making a NEW POT OF COFFEE with my new coffeemaker.

Without coffee, I am SUPER BITCH.

And I don't need SOME. I need a pot a day. At least. Now to make a new pot, then a quick run and to bed early.

I love the city, but I wouldn't want to live there. Worked there for years and that satisfied my "dream".

As for coffee - I drink one cup a day and that's enough for me. :)

I'm with you on the coffee. A pot per day, minimum. NYC can be fun, but not when cold and rainy since if you're not rich, you end up walking a lot.

At least you were a tourist in NYC. I wouldn't even drive through without a pot and a half of coffee under my belt!

I had the incredible misfortune of achieving my lifelong dream of working at WNBC quite a few years ago. I lasted six months in the city before I was a prime suspect for murder.

I was also a total caffiene addict for over 40 years. Six years ago I managed to get off of coffee (2+ pots per day) and onto Mountqain Dew Code Red (double the caffiene of coffee...but I got it free).

Today I am up in Canada, almost caffiene free (I LOVE Second Cup Paradisio), and you couldn't threaten me to drink anything from Starbucks.

I just started drinking coffee on my recent vacation. I have no idea why but I've decided I like it after years of drinking only tea. I hope I don't become dependent on it though. My mother used to drink it by the pot and then suddenly gave it up just a few years ago. She was recently diagnosed with Alzheimer's and I read an article that said coffee was good for the brain. So I tried to talk her into taking it up again but no dice.

Only a pot a day? Now that is light. A pot will not even get me going in the mornings, that takes two.
Sounds like the day was not the best for this action, but you got through it.

I'm boggled by the mental picture of your faux mink coat and sneakers. Dressing comfortably rather than stylishly is one of the privileges of middle age. Maybe you should keep some coffee beans in your pockets? Chewing those squeaky little suckers can release concentrated caffiene.
I like the restaurants that leave the whole pot of coffee on the table. I'll bet you do, too.

My old cofffee maker made 6 small cups or 3 mugs. My new one, Mr. Coffee, makes 12 cups or 6 mugs. STRONG. A pound lasts me 4 days. hahahahha.

Going back to bed soon.

Exercise then go to bed? That's not supposed to work well.

My stomach will only take a couple of cups in the a.m. Then I switch to cold caffeine--usually unsweetened green tea, and occasionally a soda. But I'm not sure I turn in to Super Bitch without it. In fact, some weekends I skip it all together or at least delay and/or cut back.

We went right up to the flatiron...Have not been that close in a looong time. Flatiron is the most gorgeous building. I love the view from the ES however, on a clearish day. I took some great photos in 2006 and cropped them. Even cropped the Flatiron, the Chrysler, etc. Managed to get the smog out with Picasa.

Hi Kathryn, another obsession we share, although now I am down to 3 shots of espresso a latte in the morning and a chai latte later in the afternoon. I also read that new research on 3 to 5 cups a day possibly preventing Alzheimer's, and thought seriously about upping my intake. The only thing that holds me back is those coffee migraines I used get if I didn't get my fix early enough in the day. (How I dreaded fasting for blood tests and things!)

I may be making a trip to Massachusetts in the next few months, so if I do I know where we should meet. Starbucks!

Yes Kathryn, you have to be close to the Flatiron to appreciate it -- all those terra cotta faces and ornamentation. Here's a little history (not sure how well known this is). When the Flatiron was built (1913 I think) it was thought that the shape and angle of 23rd and Broadway would create dangerous wind patterns. Young NY men used to hang around the area hoping a gust of wind would blow the skirt of any passing lady to reveal her ankle. The cops on the beat used to say "23 skidoo" (for 23rd st.) which is how that Gatsby era expression came about.

Hi! Kathryn!

Well I am with you all the way. On the morning I have tests at the hospital and I cannot have my java, OMG! I am so mean. I don't like anyone, don't want to talk to anyone, and just generally want everyone to leave me alone. Much less a hubby who just doesn't really get it, that your whole morning "ritual" is out of sync. Plus that cold rain, the wet coat, and the problems with your tour, yeah! I would be ready to commit a crime! I hope all is better now, and you do need to get a thermos, and if hubby wants you smiling, he can carry it for you!!

Hope all is ok now, tho if you got that familiear cup in your hand, I know you are fine..And you are right about tea. I never could get into drinking it for breakfast, makes me real crabby. Just not enough for me..
By the way, I am just getting over bacterial pneumonia, the kind that comes on so fast, it literally knocks you down. That is where I have been..I see I missed a lot of good posts. Trying to catch up..Maybe I will just sip my hazelnut laced love and go from here!:)) Have a nice one,, You deserve it...(I hate snain! It is like when the kids cannot make up their mind!! Ellen B

I have three rich cups of coffee in the morning. Often it is the highlight of the day. But I don't get cranky if I don't get coffee. What makes me just awful to be around is skipping two meals. I don't know I am cranky until someone tells me(yells at me) or how much better I feel after eating. Thanks for the post. I enjoyed it. Especially as I drank my coffee as I read it.

Oh my, I kept thinking of that show Gilmore girls where she always asked for an IV drip for coffee. I'm not much of a coffee drinker but can be pretty unpleasant if forced to go without Pepsi for any extended period of time. My husband however must have a full pot of coffee to be even remotely nice.

I went South for St. V's Day to visit my mom and assorted family and all went well. We got back really late to Maryland (lots of really slow traffic from Richmond to DC) so we ordered a pizza for our dinner and although we were tired, felt okay - at 2 am both of us were up with either a need to regurgitate or empty our "selves" - somewhere along the way we got either food poisoning or the flu - either one was sufficiently close to death we did not care for a true definition. Hubby is at the doctor's right now for treatment of a back problem he also acquired with the flu/food poisoning and I am finally getting a hold on solid food again. Kathryn, I don't know which is worse - denial of the necessary caffeine or the inability to drink it and get rid of the caffeine "headache" and dreadful morose feeling of need. Which do you think?

It's the bone numbing dampness. Once it settles in nothing helps but a hot bath.

Ever since reading Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, I've had fantasies about running away to SCAD. I highly recommend it!

Layla, I will have to look up that book. She is really entranced by SCAD. The FIT requirement was so intensive she decided she wouldn't finish it because she'd already been accepted by some others.

In Savannah, they call it "The Book", you'll love it. The school is topnotch and the weather divine.

Jessica: DRUG OF CHOICE.

Debby. Prices are double in NYC compared to Boston, probably even much higher than where you are. And we were on a schedule. And you couldn't just SIT DOWN AND ORDER COFFEE.

We had already eaten dinner.
