I first heard about this story from my subscription to updates from the Economist. I found out a little more from the BBC, here's a link to the article. Apparently two nuclear submarines collided under the Atlantic. That's right, physically banged into each other.
The submarines, one French, one British, were probably both carrying nuclear missiles. Luckily, no one was hurt, although witnesses say the Brits' sub showed outward signs of damage. Hmm...
I guess it's a sign that anti-sonar technologies are pretty advanced if they didn't hear each other from a few inches huh? What are the odds of two subs smashing into each other? From what I understand no such datum exists.
No one was hurt, that is again the main thing. Just astonishing though that this happened. I wonder what the sailors thought.
SMASH!!!
"Holy crap Bob the whales are striking back!!!"
Peace

Both NATO (chiefly the US) and the Russ played chicken all the time and probed each other's defenses on a regular basis. Accidents were bound to happen. It was part of the Cold War and gave our guys a lot more confidence in our tactics/equipment in case of a shooting war.
