Gather will be removing groups that are owned by inactive members on a periodic basis. If you are a moderator of an active group and the group owner has left Gather (has not logged into Gather for 6 or more months) the group you moderate will be affected.
Here's what you need to do: contact the Support Team by Sunday, Feb 22, 2009. Provide your username, the username of the inactive group owner, the group display name and group URL that you moderate. Gather will transition you from moderator to owner of the group. Once you are the owner you will have the ability to customize the group with new group features. On February 24th Gather will then remove groups owned by inactive members.

Will group owners be given some notice prior to the removal of their groups?
...and will there be a list made available to the community identifying the groups that will be removed?

I'm glad to hear this periodic clean up is being well received.
Group owners who have not logged into Gather for the past 6 months were notified by Gather of this upcoming clean up several weeks ago. They were instructed to log into Gather if they wanted to retain ownership of their groups. If they did log into Gather then their groups are not considered to be owned by an "inactive" member and will be retained. If they did not log into Gather then their groups will be removed.
If a moderator has taken over running a group from an inactive member, my announcement above, at the groups.gather.com group and the help.gather.com group is an important message for them to see. Please pass the word around to any of your friends who moderate groups in case this announcement applies to them.
Can you give us a hint as to how many hundreds (or thousands) of groups will be terminated?
Will a list of the group titles be available so that we can see if there are any we might want to use for new groups?

This should help clean up the list of groups I am a member of too which will be great because I know there are atleast a handful of groups I am a member of that the owner is no longer on Gather.
Please make sure you send in details about the group(s) you're moderating to the Support Team by using the Contact Member Support form.
