Some good music is usually a quick way for me to just feel 'up' on a regular 'blue' day. For the more low, deeper and darker moods that I just can't shake, I've learned that the harder you run away from such feelings, that sooner or later they just catch up and bite you in the butt when you don't expect it, or just make it twice as painful. My solution is to let everyone around me know that I really need to be left alone. I do whatever I need to do, maybe take a two hour bubble bath (with music of course, and don't forget a glass of wine), and just let my thoughts flow. If I have the option, I'll stay in my bedroom watching reruns of favorite TV shows, take a nap, and just let the mood leave me. Maybe if it's really bad, I'll indulge in a favorite comfort food, just because I can and deserve it. More or less I take the time to 'baby' myself for a short period, and believe it or not, it works and even my deepest times of feeling despondent will last only a day or two. I've also found over the years that doing something 'creative' is an amazing mood lifter. I've made flower wreaths, or paint wood pieces such as ornaments or even little jewlry chests, and when I'm done, I feel like I created something of beauty, and there's no longer any room for feeling badly.

Hi all! The best thing I can do to improve my mood is to break a sweat. Especially a really good sweat. The deep breathing that strenuous exercise requires really helps my mood by the end of a session. The two things I do that receive the best results are really pushing myself on the treadmill or doing a touch Kickboxing DVD. Both really perk me up because they require full concentration when you get into the rhythm, forcing the things that have messed up my mood to the back burner!

One othere thing I do is to express my feelings. When I feel sad and don't know what to do I try to put my feelings into words or pictures. I write letters, start a journal , scribble, paint, draw, write a poem, play some music, build something, fix something, organize my books - I try to do anything that helps me express my emotions

So true on the impact of sunlight Shannon S. I try to get 10 to 15 minutes of sun per day at the least. The Vitamin D provides a nice boost, as well as the mood elevator that comes along with just being out in the sun.

@April - Great thoughts - I love to journal and I think that it helps see how the things I have worried about have worked out, and how much I have to be thankful for. Also I love your suggestions for painting and other artistic outlets. Sometimes it is the simple "childhood" things that can put me in a better mood!

I'd love to stay and read everyone else's ways to improve the mood, but nature has decided to put us under a tornado watch, so I'll have to sign out for a while. Have fun and enjoy.

Good idea on journaling April H. I'll definitely have to get back into that.

When I was in the hospital and they were taking so much blood I wondered if I actually had that much in me, I visualized myself saving the world because they were floating the entire US Fleet in my blood! Chered myself with hero saving the world from terrorism fantasies! By floating the fleet in my blood, that I bravely let them take in twice daily increments!
