Student Arrested For Classroom Texting

A 14-year-old Wisconsin girl who refused to stop texting during a high school math class was arrested and charged with disorderly conduct, according to police. The teenager was busted last Wednesday at Wauwatosa East High School after she ignored a teacher's demand that she cease texting.

Kids are so disrespectful.  I see people in college classes doing this.  The teachers don't mind though.  They aren't going to take you buy the hand, if you want to text during class, then you deserve to fail the course.

I think student should not be able to have cell phones on at all in school. If they won't leave them off they should be taken away until they leave the building.

Good grief. I think they should have to check their cell phones at the door. There is no reason for them to need them in class. Sad how it shows such a disrespect for their teachers.

Not for nothin', but she was wrong, plain wrong. Texting during a test is an old way of cheating. Who is a 14 yr old to defy authority (teacher). Arresting may be harsh, but I suspect there was more to it than that. My son had MY cell phone taken away once when he was texting in school, and it wasn't a test. The school handed it over to the police, and even though it was MY phone, I had to wait three weeks till it was released. I'm quite sure she knew the rules, and if she broke them, that demands repercussions IMO.

Yeah, Teresa, I remember getting in trouble for gum, too. And, I've done a lot worse things and never got arrested for it. School personnel usually dealt with these things, not the police.

Arresting her is a bit extreme, maybe school detention would have been the first step.

We actually have tote signs posted on the freeways here reminding people that there is a fine if you text while DRIVING!!! Isn't that just common sense?

She was disrespectful......but being arrested? Maybe suspension or detention or even taking away the phone and calling the parent to pick it up would have been a better course.

Most schools allow phones in case of emergency, but students and parents have to sign a waiver that it will only be used for emergencies. At colleges, it's usually reason to be brought up on charges of cheating if done during a test. As for the arrest, the school had a security officer get involved. If the security officer decided that the girl was being assualtive then they have the authority to call the police.
The article said the girl not only ignored the teacher, but denied having a phone at all and had to be frisked. Someone has taught this girl it is OK to ignore and lie to authority.

I agree completely that she should have lost her phone, etc., but arresting her?!!! Come on, don't the cops have some real criminals to be going after???!!!

The parents should have seen to it that if they were going to give their daughter a cell phone, that she leave it at home, and not take it to school with her. Parents sent their children to school to learn, but learning and being taught begin at home.

i think teachers shouldnt care, because if the kids arent paying attention, they will fail the class and thats enough punishment. and im sure there have been times when it has been an emergency and phones have been taken away.

That is stupid. She should have had her phone taken away. Arresting a 14 year old for TEXTING?! How stupid can you get?
