Remember the Jetsons? Well, way back then we all figured that by now we'd be flying around in those funny looking little vehicles, but instead, many are sitting at home because they can't afford the gas to get to work, let alone drive anywhere out-of-the-way, unless, of course, they sell their first born to feed the gas guzzlers that every car company convinced people they needed.
Well, look what
I found when I was stumbling around this morning. Leave it to some futuristic executives buried in California somewhere to come up with this odd looking Aptera. It sports 3 wheels and resembles a squished egg, and no it doesn't fly (yet) BUT... the longer you look at it, the cuter it gets plus it comes as a hybrid, all electric, or with a traditional powertrain. Now you may thing it's priced way out of your range, but, depending on what you order, it seems to be priced between $25,000 and $40,000 which in my book is not unreasonable as most of the monster vehicles that are on the road now are also right around that range, but they just seem to guzzle that expensive gas plus as you're driving down the road, most of them look so similar that you can't tell one model from the other.
I just thought this was worth sharing. For me, this would be the perfect vehicle for commuting back and forth to work, running errands, etc. as the 'electric model' boasts 100 mile range per charge... then ya bring it home and plug 'er into a regular outlet and you're ready to go again!
Frankly, I hope the guys who thought this car up, and are bringing it to the public later this year (2009) or by early spring, make a bloody fortune. At least someone out there has the foresight to realize we really NEED some alternative types of transportation that's not only affordable, but does not depend on GAS. Too bad the U.S. Federal government refused ot invest in this car. It was excluded because of it's 3 wheeled design from a Dept. of Energy program that extends low-interest loans to manufacturers of fuel efficient cars. How idiotic. These people have a car in production that could save anyone who can afford it alot of $$$ PLUS save energy starting NOW but no, we won't loan them any money; we'll loan it to car companies that claim it'll be 5 to 10 years before (or IF) they ever actually get anything worthwhile into production. This little car would be a great second car, for those short trips where a huge vehicle is not needed. It would save gas. It would produce no air pollution. It wouldn't take up 2 parking spaces. Plus, if the company had enough funding, they could most likey come up with a model that seats more than two or goes further per charge.
IF our government officials had any wish to clean up the environment and really support some of the "innovators" out there who have actually come up with a great idea and give them the loans they desperately need to get their ideas out of the blueprint stage and actually into production, we'd all benefit.
I guess our new president doesn't really advocate change... he just "says" he does.

Note that the Aptera will also be available in hybrid as well as pure electric.
I can just imagine this on the streets of Europe with a massive surge of exports reversing the nation’s trade deficit. This is “stimulus” Mr. President and it is GREEN stimulus at that. But you wanted pork not real stimulus. You didn’t really want job creation right?
