If it's Tuesday, This Must be Belgium - 2/17/09

This week, a walk in the woods.  Oh, and there's a river that runs through it.  I won't say where this is, though some people may be able to figure it out.

Ah, a lazy creek...so serene...so...algae encrusted (duckweed, actually)

 Just makes you want to relax...

 Okay, this is a little more active.  A nice little sluiceway through the rocks.

Duck, duck, goose...duck, goose!!

Hmmm, what happened to the nice little stream...

Seems to be drawing a crowd (okay, not a crowd...but a few curious folks)

Some neat bright orange (red?) flowers

Now that's a nice view, but what is that floating off in the distance?

Ah, seems some folks out for a leisurely rafting trip

I really like the cool pattern on these rocks

Though it seems some people decided to get a closer look

How about and even closer look

Closer? (Um, hey up there...yeah you in the gray shirt, you mind throwing me a rope?)

Oh never mind.  Continuing down stream a bit.

Back to quiet places again...

Hello turtles...hey, you in front...nice green coat you're wearing.  Tres chic.

And we're back to the solitude of the duckweed

Well Billy, I don't want to get your goat, but that was a nice trail through the woods and (almost) over the river.

Those flowers are called Trumpet Vine by common name...very nice place, I especially love the water forging through that narrow area....this COULD be NE but I don't think so....

Not me Jan, but I did take the photos of those climbing the rocks from the safety of the other side of the gorge. Actually, I'm not sure "safety" is the right word, since I was standing on a rock outcropping with nothing between me and a bit of a plunge.

From the foliage and the trumpet vine, I'd guess you're somewhere around here. We don't have those kinds of rapids (that I know of) in KY, Canada geese are everywhere. How about West Virginia?

I would say very close to West Virginia, Sarah.

That's not an insignificant river, at least by east coast standards (the Columbia it's not...) I'm on the North Fork of the Kentucky and it's no where near that big. Ohio R. would be bigger, though I'd think...

Could be Tennessee. I don't think it looks coastal, and while the turtles suggest it's a bit south of me, I don't think it's a whole lot more south.

This is fun, even for a geography bonehead like me (I was thinking, as I always think, that W. VA is south of KY...doh!)

Not that far south. Upstream from these Great Falls is WV. But this is the Potomac, splitting VA and MD. These photos were taken from the Maryland side, so the rock climbers are on the Virginia side. It's a great spot not too far upstream from Washington DC.
