One year ago today the Republic of Kosovo declared its unilateral independence from Serbia. It's been a rocky year for the tiny republic, but it has made it to a major benchmark. Serbia still does not recognize the independence of Kosovo, the UN is struggling with how to police the area, and Kosovo finally got it's military up and running. But, these setbacks won't stifle their celebration.
So, the big challenge for Prishtina? Dealing with the northern portion of their small republic, which is heavy with ethnic Serbs. Belgrade needs to cooperate with Prishtina in order to aide the people living in this region. The EU failed to properly police this area in the transition period. But, there are many things going on the region I don't have time to write about yet, and I just wanted to wish them a happy independence day.
