What are your prefences? Store brand or your brand?

I don't know about everyone, but I have certain items I would not trade for a cheaper brand.  Like Carnation Evaporated Milk, to me it saves me money using this product.  I do not have to use as much as I would a cheaper brand. 

What about other readers, what are your favorite brands?  Do they save you money or do you lose value on the cheaper items?

I use generic brands for veggies, but name brand, most of the time, for pop.

I have found several generic brands that were very good. I won't buy a generic to save money becaus eif the quality or taste isn't as good then I am losing money IMHO.

I do shop sales and look for best deals but there is one thing that I must have name brand and that is Coffee Mate. The cheap stuff just does not please me.

We have a generic brand here called (no kidding it's a registered trade mark name) No Name Brand. It all comes in yellow boxes, bottles, bags, and packages. Their stuff is better than most big name brands. We keep a tub of their vanilla ice cream in our freezer. We love it! Best ice cream we've ever had.

I tend to use mostly name brand items because I pick up what I grew up with since it's familiar and use coupons to get the item cheaper. The only things I really compromise on that I can think of at the moment are paper towels and frozen veggies(although I'm sure there are a few more things).

I prefer brand name items also. I did recently buy cvs brand paper towels and tissue though and I like it.

On canned and frozen vegetables, I go with the store brand. On other items, I comparison shop and if I find that one of favorite brands is too expensive, I'll go with a more inexpensive type of the same item. Have you noticed that prices have gotten higher at the grocery store? I have.

It depends, I will always try the store brand at least once to see how good it is, if I like it and it is cheaper I will buy it. There are a few things that only the original is good though. But usually I try to save money and buy what ever is cheapest.

Can I tell you a secret?
Generic brands come from brand name companies.

Hubby use to work for LF (not full name) Foods. He was a combune driver, he picked the beans. They move the beans to the plant, they get tossed in the washer, and then whichever cmpy was needed that day, that was the label that got put on. One day, Libbys, next time Green Giant, another Copps brand and so on and so forth.
Same with cigs. I like Newports, but do smoke the generic brand of Newports when money is low, but most people don't know they are from the same company.
TP is the same, and so are quite a few others.
Reason I know besides where dh use to work, I worked behind the scenes of a couple of these companies.

The name brand things I really like are Pepsi, Campbell's cream of chicken soup, and Chef Boyardee for tomatoe and pasta soups.

The Canadian No Name brand is equal to or better than most name brands. Also the Zayres house brand "President's Choice" is outstanding.

Although if really cheap I may stray occasionally, but when it comes to ketchup... it has to be Heinz.
Cottage cheese has to be Knudsen, and I have a few others I'm sure...

It really depends on what it is.

If you are talking shampoo.I buy name brand. I have yet to find a store brand or generic brand that works good on my hair.


There are just certain things I will not buy store brand or generic off. I have tried the alternative and it wasn't pleasant. But I do buy the off brands off some things. Such as can veggies.

I'll try store brands once and then decide whether or not to buy again. Most products that are used as ingredients can be successfully substituted with store brands. Store brand canned soups, for example, work fine in casseroles. If I'm eating the soup, I want the name brands. I don't see any difference in evaporated milk.

Most of it is all the same and comes out of the same factory. Except for pop. But I don't do pop.

some store brands are ok. I can really tell a difference in cereals....like the Cheerios and Honey Combs and a few of the others. The store brand Cheerios have more of an airy texture. Things like soups, granola bars, pastas, and pickles I don't taste a difference. The items are usually made by the same company anyway and they just put a different label on there for the store. My daughter drinks colas sometimes and she says she can't tell a difference in Coke Classic and the store brand colas.

It just depends on the item. If it doesn't taste as good or better, then it's not saving me money cause no one will eat it.

I use a mixture of name brand and generic. French Fried onions I prefer name brand but if I don't have enough money I will use generic. My grandmother prefers campbells cream soups. Will not use anything else.

Here's something funny. I've been doing more comparison shopping and sometimes the generic brand costs more than the namebrand. I found this to be true with mayonnaise and dairy products and sometimes the coffees and capaccinos and chocolate stuff. You just have to be on your price alert to notice these things. Then, again, there are people that don't have to be frugal shoppers. I'm not one of them. Sometimes I think because I've been a frugal shopper for so long that I would do it even if I didn't have to.

Lately I've been going with the store brand more (as long as it actually does save me money) since I lost my job and we are trying to conserve in every way possible. But it's true that some things just don't taste as good!

There are some store brands my kids and I like better than the name brands. I like the Kroger brand diet cola with lime better than the name brand, but none of the store versions of Dr Pepper are worth buying. So I buy both. If we don't like the store brand or it isn't as good, there's no point in buying it.

I think it depends on the product actually.....I've been going organic due to food allergies so it's kinda hard to answer this now.....Trader Joe's has good store brands as does Whole Foods with their 365* brand.....

Lately I go for whatever is lowest sodium as far as food goes. Other stuff I am a little bit of a brand snob but I try to find coupons to make it cheaper. Like i love dove soap, vanilla scented secret deoderant and chocolate flavored lip gloss! LOL
