Question for South Carolina Residents

So, how do vehicle tags work in SC as far as renewing them each year?  What I mean is here in Georgia a new vehicle tag is due each year during our birthday month. Is SC the same way or is there a specific time of the year, or what? 

I need to renew my tag in Georgia in May, I am trying to get it done in SC around the same time to avoid doing it twice and/or avoid paying here and then paying to transfer there. 

My move date has changed to mid-June so I can avoid Bike Week(s) and also still attend Geowoodstock 7 without having to drive 10 hours to get there.

Any specific info would be appreciated.

Larry says it is good for one year from the date you register your car here in SC.

I think you could register here because you already have your address and that way you would avoid renewing in Georgia in May. You would have SC tags for those few weeks you are still in Georgia, but I don't think that would be a problem.

Chris, I'd rather get answers from residents since it saves me searching for my exact answer, not to mention earns me points ;-)

Thanks Gloria. Maybe I'll transfer my tag in April then. That should be less expensive.

I think gloria has the right idea. I don't blame you for not wanting to pay twice. I know plates are really expensive here in OH.

You may have to switch your dl before changing tags...that's what we had to do before Georgia would let us change our tags....I kept my Michigan DL for a long time (and tags), since I also didn't want to have to pay twice.

I AM A SOUTH CAROLINA RESIDENT...................HeeHee!!!! Not been on much today....MIL was scheduled to have knee surgery but learned last night at 10:30 her surgeon had a medical emergency. Well, she got up this morning sick and had a fever so off to the doctor we go (about mid day and then had to wait the rest of the day)............sinus infection and ear infection.

Well, Nana is correct....SC tags are good one year from date registered in SC! I also think she has a good idea about registered in SC since you do have a SC address!!!
I've never heard of renewing a tag during your birthday month...how odd is that? Most states have you renew the same month every year of when you first registered and tagged the vehicle. WOW I learn something new / odd every day : - )

Pa was like that Katherine. Georgia just does things backwards. If I remember correctly, when I first moved here, everyone had to get tags in January each year. That backed up the tag office badly. They switched it to bday month several years ago and now there is never a wait at the tag office and mail payment is turned around really fast. Much more efficient.

Florida is just like Georgia, you had to renew every year during your birth month. But IL it is just whenever you get your plates, whatever month that would be then it is good for a year.
FL was a lot cheaper than IL to get tags too, it cost me somewhere around $32 in FL and it is $84 or somethign like that here in IL.
