So I posted on Saturday that my oven wasn't working properly and I had trouble baking my cake. I didn't have much of an option but to drive 20 miles to finish baking the cake in my brother's oven. It spent an hour in mine, and the end result was it baked around the edges. It baked an additional 24 minutes in his, and while it was done, it was a little flattened in the center, but not much that icing couldn't cover it.
First matters first. I didn't drive there. He picked me up. Liquid cake makes driving difficult unless someone's holding it. After it baked, he wouldn't take me home. He didn't take me home until the next morning, well actually the afternoon. I started to make the icing, but he took over when my phone rang, and he wouldn't relinquish. He wouldn't let me decorate it either. I had big plans for that cake. It was to have a tree and a quote on it, with flowers - very minimal icing, as buttercream is very sweet, sweeter than my mother likes it. We all know this.
That's why after I made the chocolate icing, I was going to make a white whipped icing to do the remaining decorations, and the pink buttercream to do little floral accents. Instead, the cake looked like this, all because I had to answer the phone.
If that wasn't bad enough, when we actually cut the cake, I ended up not liking it. He added far more sugar than it called for, and the icing was WAY too sweet. The buttercream only added to that effect. He told our mom that I made it, when I didn't and I tried telling her otherwise, but I don't think she believed me. He was always her favorite.
The only person that liked it was my father because he likes really sweet icing. My mother told me my brother could make a better cake, and that I should just quit.
It's not fair! He sabotaged it! I love making cakes. I love baking. I love decorating my creations
My oven, on the other hand, is 50 degrees lower in the middle of the oven, and off to the sides, it is the correct temperature. So I still don't know what's wrong with it, or even how to explain it to my dense maintenance man that doesn't understand the simplest of things. My oven obviously isn't working right. I don't turn my heat on in another room because despite the brand new thermostat, it didn't fix the problem of setting it at 50 and having it get up to 80 degrees within an hour. In the same room, I don't have any lights plugged in either because they don't stay lit there, which is also my assumption as to why I keep losing my IP address, as that is where my cable modem is plugged in at--it's the room with the cable jack in it.
