It appears a plane en route to Buffalo, NY from Newark, NJ has crashed into a house in Clarence, a suburb of Buffalo. Continental Flight #3407, a 74 seat bombardier (Turbo Prop Q) was reportedly carrying 44 passengers and 4 crew members when it down around 10:20 PM. The house is a total loss.
Several fire companies, police agencies and medical agencies have responded. A state of emergency has been declared for the area. Because of the intensity of the fire and fumes they have evacuated residents of 12 area homes. They have just confirmed 49 dead.
They will not be holding another press conference until 4 AM according to local news channel WKBW. They are expecting this fire to take some time to burn out, before they can start their investigation.
Being from this area I can tell you the plane crashed within 3-4 miles of the Buffalo Airport runways. It is a suburban area outside of the city sprawl.
One eyewitness reported to a local news outlet that he saw fire in the engine area of the plane as it went down.
This happened about 25 miles from my place so I will add more as I find out.
