I am a member of a review site that recently had some controversy over whether or not it is acceptable to use profanity in negative reviews. Here are my thoughts on the matter. Please feel free to share yours.....
There will be times when a reviewer feels, compelled by honesty, to write a negative review. This does not, however, necessitate that the review be a hurtful one. I believe even if one doesn't find it unnecessary to personally attack an author or publisher, one might find it very unwise indeed.
In the same token, not only is using profanity unnecessary, it's completely unacceptable. Even negative reviews can be done with tact and eloquence. If being eloquent is not the norm for the reviewer, it can at least be done with taste and style. If that isn't possible then all is lost and perhaps the reviewer should find a new type of writing pursuit.
It's almost shameful to admit that I had more than a smidgen of enjoyment coming up with some examples to use in negative reviews. Luckily, I find rare occasion to use them. If others will bear with me, I will share a few examples for those who may be in need of a tactful start.
There is no reason that the profane term of "BS" cannot be substituted with "male cow dung". Such as....
"I closed the cover and had to look down at my shoes. I was sure that they needed to be cleaned because upon reading this book, it felt like I just waded through a field of male cow dung."
Other examples:
"The story was such utter tripe and so tasteless that I wouldn't smear it on a stale crust of bread and attempt to feed it to my worst enemy."
"I'm so glad to be finished with this book. I would offer if for recycling but I don't think I'd even get two cents. It isn't worth that."
"I was surprised that I used a whole box of tissues while reading this book. It was not a heart-rending story but a story so boring that it brought me to tears."
Etc....
I reserve all credit for the previous phrases. Unless, however, they have been published elsewhere. In that case, I apologize for the coincidental misfortune. While we're on the subject of rights and disclaimers, it's common assumption that every website owner is responsible for the contents of their site. Just as every writer is responsible and liable for the words they write. A reviewer is no different. These thoughts alone should remind one to take care with their words. I don't know how plausible it would be for log files and personal data to be subpoenaed for liable or slander lawsuits but I really wouldn't want to find out.
Personally, I appreciate being part of a reputable site that offers fair Terms Of Service. I think that sometimes users may need a gentle reminder that this site is here as a courtesy to us. The staff offer us their services, most often times, free of charge and accept us with faith that we will contribute in a positive and professional manner. They are not required to make this available for us and users who do not agree with the Terms Of Service are not required to participate.
On a final note (finally :-), we've all heard the phrase "So many books so little time." Life is short so why bother reading a book you don't like. Set it aside, pick up something worthwhile and move on.
