Cool pictures. Kids should be taught young to respect firearms. that way they know they aren't a toy, or something to feared. Your "cutie" there just might end up hunting with Dad like my daughter does. She just got done applying for an Elk tag here... ;-)

Saying in advance that I'm sure you know the protocol of gun training better than I do (since I don't know it at all), I have to say that - as someone who has seen guns only on television - the image of a toddler having direct contact with one (even unloaded) doesn't seem cute to me, it seems pretty scary. I think it is good that you are teaching gun safety and keep your guns locked up - but, I would think that, for a toddler, gun safety would mean a rule of never ever touching the gun under any circumstances.

I'm not one of those people who think that guns are evil in all cases and should never be used by humans, but having lived my whole life without one and seeing no reason to have one, I guess I don't much understand the allure.

I respect hunters who provide food for their families from animals who have been allowed to live a normal animal life. However, the idea that killing makes for "great family fun" really makes me cringe.

I don't know - I'm sure you're not all that interested in a stranger's opinion, but that's what happens when you post on Gather. If anyone can explain this stuff, I'm willing to keep an open mind.

Karen- it's not the "killing" that makes great family fun, it is the camping together as a family that seems all too busy anymore. In fact, most times we come home with nothing for the freezer. A family to me is everything, and camping together with hunting as an extra for food, is just another way to get us all together for a change. If you don't like guns or hunting, fine that is your choice, we were raised differently is all. The killing, has nothing to do with fun; it is when the work & prayer begins. Take care.

My father carried a bullet from Korea, he was not big on guns. My mother insisted my brother get everything his heart desired.
It was only a bb gun, without education, he shot up everything until his friend shot him.

Kids need to be educated.

I see what you're saying, John. I think I did misunderstand you, so I'm glad that you clarified. I enjoy camping, too - even hiked and camped on my honeymoon - it is good for families to have time together away from everything.

John: I enjoy hunting... a LOT. And from my "The Old Mand and Me" series, you know that hunting with my father and brother was special for all of us every year. But... don't EVER tell me it's not about the killing. If you didn't love the kill, why would you do it twice?

Sorry Chuck, it's not all about the "killing" to me. In fact I always say a prayer right after to the animal, and my God. I do enjoy the hunt, especially with my bow, alone with nature testing my skill, but the actual kill is not my driver. If I don't eat it, I don't kill it. That's gone from me now, if it was ever there.

I think first and foremost all children should be taught to respect guns and combat techniques at an early age. But also respect should be taught simultaneously so that any use of force should only be used as a last resort. I am debating weather or not to teach my Son open hand techniques or actual lethal strikes too, he is two years old. The future could hold some very bad things if we had food crises or open border problems and or even legislation that undermines our Government from with in. I think its our duty and responsibility to teach our kids to defend them selfs.
