Yesterday with Eagles

We went on a road trip yesterday to visit my dad in the hospital. On the way back home we stopped by a lake we ran across called Rocky fork lake.  It was an over cast rainy day but it was still a nice day.

The lake was frozen over but I am not brave enough to ever venture out on ice no matter what I find that Id like to get decent photos of.  First we spotted sea gulls  and then I  spotted Bald Eagles!!  Wow, Ive never seen one alive in the wild. So mostly I just watched them.  They were waiting for the gulls to find food so that they could steal it LOL

So in hoping to get them to come closer and Heather wanting to get some sea gull shots I told her to toss a french fry in the air.  Anyone who has been around gulls know they can spot a french fry from a mile away LOL, and with the launch of the fry the gulls were all around us but no eagles :(  Here are my horrible shots but I could not be happier that I got to see live wild eagles!

I work at a large power plant here in Michigan. Because of our warm water discharge, and all the shad that live in it, we have become, within the past five years, an over-wintering spot for Bald Eagles. A few years ago, we were priviledged to see two or three all winter long. A couple weeks ago, on a day WELL below freezing, we had an Eagle tour, The folks on the tour saw well over 100 different eagles, of which at least a third were matures. It's as if they passed the word to their friends about this great new winter vacation spot.

We have them around here at the river but I have never seen one in the wild. We went looking this summer but didn't see any.

it is always so wonderful to see them flying!
When I lived in Minnesota we had a nest (they are huge!), on my way to work, so I was able to see them almost everyday~

Beautiful. Although I was suddenly reminded of a story from when we first moved here to MI. We moved 2 days before x-mas and the house is on a "lake" it was frozen, sort of. Well, a goose (I think) had gotten frozen to the ice, so my mom and brother took the banister off of the wall and smacked the ice to break it free.
