Why???

It's really heart-breaking. I've had to report cases of abuse, but I don't think anything was done, how will I know, teachers aren't allowed to get involved.

Oh my, this is heart wrenching and heart breaking......it makes me downright sick and angry that such despicable things have to happen to children/human beings...........this video and the poem bring tears to my eyes........words cannot begin to describe the horrors of abuse......and no, no matter how old a person, I'm sure the pain will never, ever go away.......thanks so much for sharing such a very, very powerful video and poem.....and yet the question continues.........why oh why? One that will most likely never be answered.

There are evil monsters in this old world and they prey on the innocent ones who can't fight back. Why? Because they are evil and crazy. May God have mercy on their souls because judgement for them will not be good.

We've found no solution for this yet. We need to do better.

We certainly have no use for abuse. It's great to see that there are people brave and strong enough to help break this sad cycle of human nature. By helping others caught in this trap is probably the best therapy one can obtain. --Joe

Why is a question I often ask. I just can't fathom why a person could or would want to hurt a defenseless innocent child. In my mind they are the worst type of abusers.

I was abused, and still am in therapy. I just did an article on haunting. I think I haunt myself. This is so horrible. I adopted an abused child. People say I'm good for doing so, but I needed to do something to stop the pain even if it was for only one child. I'd take them all if I could.Join La La Land

I have watched some of your dad's videos and they are very moving....he is doing good things with his work and now so are you !

Ths was so powerful and moving. But I am with you. Why?? There is NO EXCUSE! There are cameras, there high tech methods of checking out employees. WE have access to files and backgrounds. It is the same in nursing homes. At two of the most vulernable times in a human beings life, they are suffering at the hands of people who need to be locked up in the worst of enviorments. To take away diginity, the feeling of trust and safety when in a compromised situation, is disgusting, and the harshest of punishments MUST be doled out.

Unless more call on their governments, for more action other than the pre-notification that most facilities get so they can clean up in every way before an authority gets there, along with better security and more help, the fine work , the painful work, that your Father has taken up, will remain the crusade of those like your Father, and now you, who know, like myself from being in the nursing homes at all hours, just what goes on..Thousands of dollars go for ridiculous causes, overseas, but not here, for our children..

It made me cry to see the tears, and study the faces. No one knows the extent of pain that another human being has had to endure, unless someone brave steps forward.. IT is our job, those of us who read these revalations, to SPEAK UP! And to keep Screaming for Justice..I am with you all the way.. While millions are spent on schools, and we should spend some on education, NO ONE can learn when their personal life is being lived behind the scenes in the manner in which we know exsists..I shall write my Congressman..Unfortuantly, we have to do more than read about this. I personally think you should mail your Father's writings to the President. If we do not keep reminding of how far the abuse of power goes, and into how many areas, and make him aware of the short comings of State governments, who refuse to address the fact that criminals are deeply entrenched in our system, the longer it will go on.. Lisa is right. 'Why' can't be answered--we're not God. BUT...'What can we do to stop it?' CAN be answered; as can "HOW can we heal from it?" That last question is important too.

Great poem, I think in many cases, the abuse starts way back and then the people who are abused don't know any other way, and the cycle repeats itself. Its very sad and bravo to those who can break the cycle!

Your father is quite a man, and your words prove that you are as well. We don't know why or how people could be so cruel to helpless children. But they will one day answer for their horrible deeds.

It's really disgusting what some people do to other people. I will never understand. The hardest part is that those who are abused often grow up to abuse others because it is about power. One reason why we need better mental health care in this country with so much. With love and care and treatment those who are abused can stop the cycle.
Part of prevention is telling the story.

I know that child abuse exists; I even remember hearing adults boasting about the things they did to children years ago when I experienced abuse. The memories do not die out so easily. There is no excuse for abuse, and I applaud the work that you and your father are doing; it is definitely needed.

Great post Roger ! WWWHHHYYY is a good question. People are abused,raped,stabbed,shot,murdered,tortured,neglected,and a host of other horrible things every day. probably every minute. I do not ponder why these pople do these things at any great length because I'd rather not know! I say this in a sense that these thoughts won't cross my mind.It seems to me that it is very difficult for a sane person to rationalize what an insane person does or the actions they carry out! I hope that one day your father and all the people that were abused could truly put the thoughts and the pain of those horrid events out of their minds. In closing I would like to say that in the 22 yrs I have known you and your family you guys are closer to me than my real family!

Sometimes there are no answers. I am also sad that your dad and others have had to suffer. The scars never go away.

there are so many kinds of abuse, beating is just one of them. Mental abuse is just as bad.

Why? It would take volumes. I guess, in a nutshell, the Bible explains: Rom 3:10-18
10 according as it hath been written — 'There is none righteous, not even one;
11 There is none who is understanding, there is none who is seeking after God.
12 All did go out of the way, together they became unprofitable, there is none doing good, there is not even one.
13 A sepulchre opened [is] their throat; with their tongues they used deceit; poison of asps [is] under their lips.
14 Whose mouth is full of cursing and bitterness.
15 Swift [are] their feet to shed blood.
16 Ruin and misery [are] in their ways.
17 And a way of peace they did not know.
18 There is no fear of God before their eyes.'

He came to give all of us a chance to receive new life and live on a different level. Most choose not to accept that life. For those that do ... God promises to conform us into the wonderful persons we were born to be. He will turn all of our suffering into glory beyond measure. That's all I know.

I am a survivor of sexual, mental and emotional abuse, when a I forgave the abusers I was able to move on. God gave me the courage and understanding, that the forgiveness I gave, I recieved peace. I remember same as the men in the video, however I`m no longer live it. Praise God !

Thank you for raising awareness of the evils of abuse of children, Nation. I've always enjoyed your father's articles. He has written quite a bit about what went on in that facility that should have protected the boys. Sadly, abuse isn't anything new and it doesn't seem to be going away anytime soon. It all is quite senseless. It takes away the very spirit of a person to be abused. I feel bad for your father and the others in the video. They are old men and it is still fresh in their minds. What a sad situation!

For the broken hearts who just need to know that there are people in the world who are giving out their strenght,love,and a shoulder to cry on if they need it.

We have found plenty of solutions to prevent child abuse. We just lack the political and personal will to advocate for them. People abuse children because they lack healthier options for dealing with their emotions. The Vermont Conference for the Primary Prevention of Psychopathology is one organization that has brought together a lot of knowledge and effective resources.

For those who aren't called to invest volunteer or work time toward a primary focus on prevention of child abuse, there's still a lot we can all do each day. When we act to form more respectful, connected relationships, we create role models in the world that may help others do the same. One of many simple ways to develop better skills is to take a very short course in compassionate communication and use the four skills that are taught. cnvc.org has more information about this as do the books of Marshall Rosenberg.

Why? That is a loaded question with no answer. Perhaps I should say no easy answers. We can analyze why people abuse children and come up with a hundred different excuses. Perhaps the abuser is responding to their own abuse, or feels powerful over someone weaker than they are. The bottom line is not letting the cycle of abuse continue. The only apt description I can find to describe the people responsible of inflicting the horrors your dad speaks of is monsters. If evil exists this is a sure example of it.

I've read your dad's work and have heard it referred to often. The sad truth is that for every one person who is like your dad there are 100 others who "fright for the children" who are actually abusers in one form or another. It is sometimes hard to distinguish which is worse. Those committing the abuse or those who pretend it's not there or try to hide it. Its been getting progressively worse instead of better. There is no accountability of anyone and secrecy reigns supreme. We don't see these stories on the news and we can't read the files in the courts "for the protection of the children". We have been building prisons for children at an alarming rate and the adoption/foster care system has become a form of welfare for many. Even the latest "bailout bill" includes over a billion extra dollars for the next two years on top of what they already receive. FL is still up in the top ten for the worst states for "juvenile justice" and "Children and Family Services". It has been for years, Jeb Bush had made it even worse. It shouldn't be a high profit political game and that is all it is for the federal and local governments. No one wants to say no to money to protect children from abuse but very few want to acknowledge that the billions that we spend leads to more abused than it prevents and as it was in your dads situation there is no one to turn to. You eventually learn to keep quiet as it results in more "punishment". Its a system out of control. Until we have transparency and accountability along with proper investigation, prosecution and sentencing of these crimes it will persist. This has to apply equally to judges, police, attorneys, social workers, "therapists" and those who use vindictive claims of abuse as well.

I'm so sorry for the pain your dad feels ... I can't ... he is not alone. It seems (just by using my memory of people I've met over the years) if one puts 10 people in a room together, at least 8 of them have a story of childhood abuse of one kind or another. Some may or may not rise to the level that these men experienced, but still, it's a terrible thing to know and to contemplate.

Oh, Roger! There is really no rhyme or reason for child abuse (or abuse in general for that matter). It is a good thing these angels have your father to help them! He is truly a great man as I'm sure dealing with these situations affect him heavily emotionally. Your poem is very heartfelt and beautiful though inspired from such tragic instances. Good job to both you and your father!

So sorry, this is a topic close to my heart. I wonder why also and in my wonderings I feel that if more punishment is rendered there would be less abuse...too many repeat offenders both child abuse, domestic violence and rape.

My mother went through the same issues because her Father had bad reactions to alcohol, he became mean. I felt so badly for her going through that.

So very sad. There is no excuse for abuse.
