In December 2002 I took a bus trip from here in Michigan to Vancouver BC. It took me three days each way. I kept a journal of it, and I was cleaning up some old files and found it. I decided to share it here. It's a bit long so i'm posting it in more than one post. I hope you enjoy it!
December 2, 2002
Lincoln Park, MI- Where the journey begins.....my bus was scheduled to leave at 7:20 p.m., but we were getting several inches of snow, so my ride wanted to leave early for the bus station...we ended up having to sit there for about 2 hours. The bus was ontime thankfully, but was almost totally full. no one wanted to move over..finally a really strange woman moved over for me...she talked to her duffle bag the entire trip...i was really hoping she'd be off the bus in toledo....
toledo, OH-thankfully this was the woman's final stop. i almost didn't have a seat...there was only one more seat available..thankfully i got it since i was traveling alone...who says being single doesn't sometimes have its advantages? I ended up having to sit next to a chinese fellow who spoke little or no english. unfortunately for me, his friend sat behind us and they kept screaming at each other in chinese...he also kept drinking some milk produt in a can that smelled horrible, and worse yet....he slurped it!!!! he got a phone call on his cell and began screaming into it..finally the bus driver told him to shut the hell up....FINALLY!!!!
Chicago, IL-luckily for me this was his stop!!! i moved over to the window seat....finally i got a really nice person to sit with...she is actually on her way to bellingham!!! it's nice ...that means i'll have company for nearly the whole time!!! her kids wired her the money for bus fare...she was in georgia for what was supposed to be 3 weeks...it had been three months...she waited till her abusive boyfriend went to work and left....i don't know if i'd be that brave. she was hoping she'd still have a job once she returned home..she works as a therapist at a drug rehab center....
Iowa- we stopped at so many cities in this state it would take forever to list them all...i just wish i had hamsters phone number..i'd call and bug him....at one of the first stops i left my tote bag on my seat while i went into the store to use a clean restroom..when i got back to the bus i realized that this child had been jumping up and down on my bag...he broke all my makeup and perfume....i was so mad..all his mom would say was "kids are kids" i told her off...some names may have been used LOL..including the one we women really love!!! and not the "b" one either....i felt better......there was a young guy from michigan who was trying to convince thise girls that cows are illegal in michigan...i had to bust him of course......my seat mate moved over to an empty seat so we could stretch out to get some sleep....for me that lasted about two stops..then i got another seat mate...she was nice but also spoke little english...but she was able to talk to the other mexican passengers as sort of a translator..that worked..she was able to tell me that one of the young guys thought i was pretty...awww....not my type..way to young, but still nice for the ego...I actually called Steve from one of the stops, and he told me he posted my itinerary...thats great!!! he guessed where i was..caught me off guard.....
Nebraska- we stopped at tons of places here to...i never realized there were so many greyhound stops in the united states..some were just a bench in the middle of nowhere with a greyhound symbol painted on it. there was a really strange guy in omaha who at the bus station has his feet up on the seats and he kept asking the women to sit on them..i asked him why, and he said "because then i want to smell my toes" ewwwwww
cheyanne, WY-i wish we had stopped here during the day, from what i could see wyoming is beautiful! cheyanne was really pretty from what i could see...i think i'll have to come back here sometime.....my kinda place....we stopped at a few other places to, but i slept through most of them..i'm trying to fight off a cold..don't wanna be sick for the meet and greet.
