The Call of the South !

The following excerpt comes from a so called "childrens book " ,which I just read for the first time. It's not hard reading ,but there are many tough words and it was written in, I think 1906 ,so there are references to an earlier culture ,which are very different.

" Ah,yes, the call of the South,of the South! "  " Its songs,its hues ,its radiant air ! Oh ,do you remember --"

Someone knew the South ,didn't they? Anybody know or can guess what children's classic this is from? An honorary Southern Belle  or Colonel  status awarded for the answer.

Yes I read this one to my daughter many times when shewas a bit younger. It is The Wind and the Willows.

Paula, I don't know how I missed reading this one,but of course saw the Disney TV version,but I enjoyed it . I'm going to go back and read some books I should have already read.

My father had a collection of the Brer Rabbit stories. Yes chilren's books. But like you said, the words were kind of tough. Being from an earlier culture. I do so enjoy them though.



Brer Rabbit Meets a Tar Baby~ That was one of my favorites..
Here is a little piece of it....

Well now, that rascal Brer Fox hated Brer Rabbit on account of he was always cutting capers and bossing everyone around. So Brer Fox decided to capture and kill Brer Rabbit if it was the last thing he ever did! He thought and he thought until he came up with a plan. He would make a tar baby!

I like the "Wind in the Willows," too. I still have these treasured books.. =)

loved Bre'r Rabbit and really only liked Wind in the Willows as a Disney thing, until I read the book again recently. I can't believe i missed so much.

Darn, I remembered that one too, The Wind In The Willows, yep, read it more than one time as a child and then to our son, when he was young. Great book, and I loved it, now and then and now will probably have to read it again. Is there a 50 book-group? I know I read many more than that a year - speed-reader here and I retain things, so reading's always been soooo important to me. Very few books do I keep, so mine come mostly from the library, other than my aromatherapy/herbal books and I'm not sure that those even count?
I'd be an honorary southerner, being that for a time, many years ago and I still have (mostly) fond memories of it, I did live in Alabama, which, unlike Florida (we also lived there) IS the south!

And Phil have ya heard that they have pulled Brer Rabbit from the quey & I hear it's illegal to own a copy because it's considered a racist publication & offensive to some ?
