Why was a big deal made of this to begin with?? So Micheal Phelps was caught smoking out of a bong, and some want to attack him. First off, it should be legalized. Prohibition does not work, as it did not work with alcohol. People are jailed for possession and sale, there is crime as a result of its illegal status. Tax dollars are wasted when users or sellers are jailed. Imagine if individuals were jailed for drinking alcohol or selling it, how would people react them.
Secondly, there is scientific basis that alcohol does more damage than cannabis. Marijuana is not physically addictive, unlike alcohol, nicotine, and caffeine (which are are mainstream and legal) . Smoking period is unhealthy, but marijuana can be consumed, drunken (in a tincture), or vaporized (which greatly minimizes , even eliminated the harmful side effects of smoking). Yet, so many act self-righteous, hypocritical and love to attack cannabis users. For the person who posted that marijuana caused brain damage, that is an outright lie, and a myth that many have been brainwashed into believing. Show me your scientific evidence for this. There is scientific evidence that the herb has medicinal purposes and heals those who have: nausea, vomiting, spasticity, glaucoma, cancer, depression, anorexia, arthritis, migraines, multiple sclerosis, and the list goes on....Phelps should be left alone. He actually suffers from ADHD, did anyone ever think he might be using it to help him relax, and concentrate. Instead of attacking cannabis (an organic herb), people should really stop and consider the long-term effects and damages caused by some prescription drugs (synthethic and chemical-ridden). We should all wake up. Open our minds, instead of being narrow-minded by the media (anti-cannabis ads and so forth) and question what we are told, instead of accepting it without examination. Kellogs, a corporation which makes mainly cereals but also other products uses a ridiculous amount of sugar, genetically modified ingredients, and chemicals which have been proven to cause diseases such as diabetes, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, cancer, just to name a few. Instead, we should be criticizing Kellogs and other corporations for the harmful ingredients they use, thinking about their long-term health effects. Our government should worry about making such harmful and synthetic ingredients illegal, rather than making marijuana an organic substance which shows to do more good than harm. This is the hypocrisy of our society. This is what drives me nuts.
I guess its okay for Kellogg sponsors to show this sort of behavior also. I guess reckless drinking is the exemplar behavior of role models. But smoking pot, oh no,that's wrong lol

it makes no sense to not legalize pot

"Smoke more to get the munchies and eat more Froot Loops"....OMG, you are absolutely hysterical! You always make me laugh.!!!
There are other people that could have been in the Olympics that don't indulge. If he can't be proud of what he has then take it from him.
But i believe you missed my point.
Alcohol is legal. There are Olympic contestants that indeed do indulge in Alcohol. Some have been snapped in photos getting drunk, or acting out of character because of the alcohol.
How is pot any different? You guessed it. It's illegal. And it's illegal because our government is repressed, puritanical, and hypocritical. There are many substances that are legal and do far more damage: caffeine, nicotine, alcohol, chemicals, preservatives, and gmo's in our food, prescription and even otc drugs have some pretty harmful ingredients
It is illegal and it needs to stay that way, while it might not be a big deal to you it is for kids and people with breathing problems.
As for him, he is just stupid. I think he is acting with much better judgment now than he did that day. He won't notice the lost money, he'll get plenty more people interested in him.
Children in the breathing air left unattended will be sold to the circus.
But it isn't. And until it is, Kelloggs would be put in a very bad light if parents allowed their little ones to fantasize and swoon over their Olympic hero.
I once gave a woman a ride home, She lit up a joint in my car and it took months to get that stink out. One of my jobs years ago had a lot to do with drugs or more specifically drug supplyers. I have relitives that use that crap but they know better than to use it around me. I'll flat out tell them to get the hell off my property.
If it is so beneficial to peoples health let research develop pills or shots from it and forget the stinking smoke that makes even a smoker sick.
Be a role model to your own kids...no one should live their' lives to suite the expectations of anyone else, but, those you have a relationship with.
None of his other sponsors dropped him because historically, companies who 'stand by their man' until the furor dies down do better in the stock market than those who don't.
The one exception: when children are linked to the targeted market (i.e., mothers of small children), companies HAVE to take the position that Kellogg did or take the risk of being thought of as "the people who think an illegal drug user is a good role model for my kids."
No parent wants their kid to grow up to be an illegal drug user and go to jail--no matter what the parent's own habits may entail.
Marketing is a world unto itself; it's the ultimate "everything rests on our reputation" business.
I'm not against legalizing marijuana for medicinal purposes, although I do take issue with the comment above that essentially said there are no negative side effects. In those who suffer from depression, frequent usage contributes to the development of psychosis.
Richard Owl Mirror has had some interesting posts on this issue; very informative--he does his homework. I suggest that all who read this article go look them up. His experience with the young lady who was delighted to learn that he had a license for medical marijuana because that meant (she thought) that he could then sell to her....that's the sort of thing that strict controls would prevent. (To his credit, Richard was highly offended by her assumption and sent her on her way. If he had sold to her, he would have lost his license and the benefit to his medical conditions that the license affords him.)
When I read this article, it sounds as if the writer has a greater issue that hasn't been uncovered yet; the position comes across as very defensive. Whatever it is, I wish him/her the best.
The Drug War has been as you note, an abject failure. Here is a good place for the president to actually increase freedom rather than chip away or take it away as he is doing to all of us economically. If naught else, it will save billions he can waste elsewhere and save lives in the process.
AND just for the record ADHD is treated by stimulants NOT something that "slows them down" if anything marijuana would make ADHD 1000 times worse. I guess if someone wanted to self medicate (which I think is RETARDED - follow your doctors orders people!) CRACK or COCAINE would be more likely to help an adhd patient then weed would.
I think illegal drugs are illegal for a reason. I was married to a man who was addicted to marijuana and don't you dare tell me people can't get addicted because they can and do I have seen it first hand. He wanted to stop doing drugs so he could have a life with me and our daughter. He couldn't stop and he hid it for a while and went on to heavier drugs and then started beating me to the point of almost killing me. He was a sweet person when we met who worked as a nurse aide and took care of people. When I left him he had beaten me several times and almost killed me, held me at knife point several times while i was in the late stages of pregnancy and choked out neighborhood people who "annoyed him" before he "had his buzz on".
I will not agree with you on this.
As for whether or not it should be legal - that is up to the government. I think they should legalize all drugs and put much stricter control over them and heavy taxes as well and make a ton of money off it and limit where people can use them at like bars only and you can't leave till effects wear off.
As for whether or not it has medicinal effects I am sure for some people it does and I am not suggesting to deny these people but I am suggesting to go about it responsibly and controlled so that what happens to my now EX husband will not happen to others too. For normal people it may not have the same pull as it does for people with low self esteems, people with medical problems or impressionable people who believe what others tell them and they are more likely to get addicted then others.
I don't like the effects alcohol have on others either but I try to be as healthy as possible and not put foreign substances in my body - I don't even like to drink pop because of caffeine.
I do not judge others who do though I say live and let live but I don't want to smell or see it in my home or around my family.
Congrats on being MOTD for It's Your Day
Have you ever heard of anyone dying from smoking pot?
