People just do not want him to succeed!!! You can put that disgusting Sean Hannity and Anne Coulter in that "Rush Limbaugh pile" too!

I am terrified that it will not work, but I know doing nothing is GUARANTEED NOT TO WORK.
I really do not want to spend my retirement surrounded by young people who don't have food, medical care and a safe place to live.

"They" say that every $1 in tax cut puts 75 cents back into the economy, but every $1 in stimulus puts $1.50 back into the economy. I sure hope they are right.

But Phyllis, don't they get it? It's not about him succeeding...it's about America succeeding. There's no talking reason, is there?

I agree with you. There are some people who so much hate the Democratic Party in general and Barack Obama in particular, that they would rather see him fail. What they overlook is the fact that if he fails, then we all fail.

We can't continue to go down the path of higher unemployment, more home foreclosures, more bankruptcies, more businesses failures and all the other ills facing our country.

So for those who wish for failure from the Obama administration, just think about your own friends and family. Think about going to food banks. Thinking about the dramatic change in your own lifestyle.

Do you want them to be part of this historic failure?

The stimulus package may not bring this economy back, it needs more than that, but it will help quite a few survive till it manages to come back, just as Roosevelt did. Pork is a subjective term, Publius. If it creates jobs, it's hardly just pork, it's something else, in that regard. As for Republican's wanting Obama to fail,....duh!

Actually, if it were to get that bad (and actually it is in some rural areas) I would hope that people would become more resourceful and learn how to grow their own food and co-op. If you can put dirt in a box, you can grow tomatoes.

People are more resourceful than many think. Sure it will be tough, and it will take awhile, but we'll make it, and come back even better than ever!

I don't think the stimulus plan will work...I think it's more that the whole thing is a cyclic process and just needs time to cycle through....it's going to get worse before it gets better, but it will get better eventually.

Even right after WWII, the unemployment rate soared....unemployment is going to really go up once we bring our troops back from Iraq also....history and the numbers support that....

Jody ... Both Bush, McCain and even Obama were pushing the bailout/stimulus package before the election. On this stimulus thing, this is Keynsian theory, accepted by both sides as the best alternative for now ... it is what we should do, whether it will work or not. If it doesn't work, then we need to start thinking about doing more, but at least we will have time and be doing something productive in the mean time.

Janet, this is not cyclic ... this is caused by the huge deficit spending, and borrowing. The deficit spending is a Republicans trademark since Reagan. Republicans keep saying that if you lower taxes on the rich you will generate more revenue ... this has not worked, and it has also not created jobs or growth, but it has given a certain group of very rich people a monopoly on power and control of the country.

Did anyone see Gibbs' press briefing yesterday? Gibbs made a good attempt at political correctness, but he made it clear that this package is NOT what Obama asked the Congress to do. Obama asked for a package in the mid $600B to mid $700B that stimulated the economy and created jobs. Gibbs also admitted that the package has pork!

Gibbs isn't graceful, but he did a good job handling the press' questions on the bill and made it clear there is a seperation between the White House and Congress.

Obama is going to get "stuck" approving a package that doens't meet his own criteria. Veto won't be an option since that would by a political axe.

Politicking is going to ruin Obama. He can't control Pelosi. She will be unwilling to cut anything she sees as a personal success..... even at the cost of Obama's reputation. She'll hold on like a pit bull to all of the excesses in the package because she won't allow removing them to look like a "win" for Republicans.

Now what? Where do you go from here?

We need to do something to stem the loss of jobs and the stimulus plan will at least do that and pump some badly need money into the American economy.

You hit on a very, very important point here, Lori. One that many people don't even think about, yet it rules their lives totally.

For years and years in this country, business has been 'king'. Especially with the advent of television, we have been taken over by messages that you need this thing, you don't need that thing, we must do this, this is bad, this is good. The GOP are the party that has chosen to take up that banner and carry it forth.

The messages are now all too familiar:

- This food tastes good - eat it now! Eat more of it! It's cheaper! It's faster! Don't let the food nazis tell you how to eat! Don't let the PETA idiots and tree huggers tell you we're destroying our water supply and our land! Just eat this crap!

(Reality - in the name of profits, we have veritably destroyed our health in this country. Our kids are obese, with diabetes and behavior disorders; our lifespans have been shortened, with increases in cancer and heart disease. Our bodies are malnourished. Even the 'healthy' food on the grocery shelves is less nutricious than it was 50 years ago.)

- Cut taxes! Don't let those socialists and marxists tell you that a fair living wage and decent benefits is something we can afford! People need to take responsibility! No more welfare state! No more government programs! The only way to a healthy economy is to serve the rich - and their wealth will trickle down to you!

(Reality - we have an increasing gap between the very, very rich and the poor in this country and most of the folks in the middle are sinking down into poverty. I'm sick of it. We are almost beyond redemption. I don't know whether it is simply because most Americans are just stupid naturally or chose to believe this total nonsense. Even when history shows them to be wrong, they don't care. The more I hear from the GOP lately, the more I picture the WALL-E scenario. I agree that there are people don't want Obama to succeed, even at the expense of our entire country. I don't agree with everything in the stimulus package, but I do know that things are a mess now, and something has to be done.

But embracing a failed ideology, and pouting about the departure from welfare for the rich (tax cuts) is exactly what Republicans are doing. I've said it before, it is not in their interests to see Obama emerge as the savior of this country, and they will do whatever is necessary to see that he, and therefor we, fail. Party and class before country, at any cost. The Republican party is, quite simply, Un American at this point, and anyone that isn't writing their congress people at this point to urge them to be Americans first, and Republicans second, is just as bad. I have been listening to a lot of different discussions on this by economists from both sides of the Liberal-Conservative coin and the more I hear the more I wonder why the Republicans are being so obtuse! Even a large number of conservative economists seem to agree we need to spend money to make money. Tax credits on the wealthy, even if they were to actually work in the supposed "Trickle down" effect, it would take years before it would be felt on the economy.
I loved Obama's comments about the Government Auto pool... better to buy Hybrids that would create jobs in the car industry to produce those Hybrid vehicles, save money on fossil fuels and be good for the climate/environment? What's wrong with that?

I still get the impression that the current Republican mind set is to fight tooth and nail against any ideas Obama puts forth... who cares if the US goes down the tubes, they all have their multimillion $$ nest eggs so they won't be the ones suffering!

Actually, unfortunately, the lies of the right are making headway with the public, and I wouldn't expect any of this is a shoo in....

Hardly. The stories of management subversion of the present process are legion. They have developed a system to side step the spirit of the law, and consultants that are experts in the use of coercion, bribery, and just plain terrorism are the first call made whenever an election is deemed imminent. It also doesn't prohibit the use of a secret ballot, the difference is it leaves the choice up to the workers, not management.

What is going on with the Republicans is not that they are out of touch ... go back to Reagan, the system has been about locking into a money stream and bolstering it with tax cuts. Tax cuts have been the number on reason for the Republicans to exist. Even if they do not believe in them, they must support tax cuts to be part of the "revolution".

When George W. Bush smeared John McCain in 2000 for being Liberal, it was about tax cuts.

At a time when only 20% of people wanted tax cuts. 80% of Americans wanted the "surplus" to go towards social security, health care, or paying down the debt. What did we get? More tax cuts for the rich, and more money flowing back into the Republican party.

The Republicans are about the business of purging their party, cutting all moderates. They are still following that pattern. They have been able to hide outrageous actions for 30 years ... why should they feel any fear of being caught, they own the media, or at least enough of the steady media that supports then that people are familiar with? They will keep going ... and they have the money stream, even now, to keep mobilized and fighting. It is a scientific mathematical strategy.
